“An oasis”
Hakone is beautiful in the autumn and Fujiya has a great garden. The hotel captures the essence of an elegance from bygone years, brings your pulse down immediately. It has my unreserved recommendations.
“Old time hotel”
We enjoyed the Fujiya Hotel because of the very large room we were given, the geothermal water into our bathtub and the beautiful garden. The garden was a delight in the early morning. The hotel is easy to get to--train to Odawara then to Miyanoshita Stn, then walk down the steep laneway, turn left and walk about 600m to the hotel which is on the left. We had one dinner at the hotel in the downstairs grill and the price was okay but a bit more than we usually pay. We also used the coffee shop on the road near the laneway from the station--very friendly couple, and very clean. Otherwise we ate at places on the Hakone circuit. The circuit (train, ropeway, boat, bus) is great. We particularly liked the open air museum, the cedar walk, and we had a good view of Mt Fujii from the Imperial garden. One negative was our room was clean, but not up to the superclean standard we experienced elsewhere.
“Good budget selection”
The Fujiya Hotel is an historical building (they have their own little museum) in 'downtown' Hakone, conveniently located near several bus stops. There are several shops within walking distance. It's about a 45 minute bus ride to Odawara station. Their service is impeccable, they have a spectacular Japanese garden / atrium, and the restaurants serve delicious food. The hotel is quite dated - it doesn't look like they have really updated it in a few decades. Celebrities and dignitaries have stayed here (photographic evidence lines the hallways), but probably not since the 80's. Although it's old and dated, it is clean, has good basic amenities, and it is a traditional Japanese onsen resort. The onsen (hot springs) water is piped directly into your room's bathtub, which is very nice! We enjoyed our stay here, and thought it was good value for the price we paid.
“Needs renovation”
The hotel's got a lot of history and would be a location to visit if you are going to Hakone. They have their own bakery and a highly recommended French restaurant. They have a very nice Japanese Garden and lot of TLC went into the many fish ponds as well. I wouldn't recommend you staying there. The hotel is very run down and many areas need to be updated.
“Not impressed”
We booked this hotel based on the glowing review it got from Frommers. If you have read that review it portrays the hotel to be something it is not. The room was ready on time, but we were provided with a smoking room when we had requested a non-smoking room. The service was excellent, but beyond the smoking factor the quality of the room was very poor, making this the worst value for the money of any hotel we have ever stayed at. The facilities have the bones to be world class but it looks like it has been decades since there was a remodel. Room was dated and musty. Would not stay again.
