the staff on the phone was most unhelpful when I asked where we were supposed to park as the hotel is on the road...we had to drive round 3 times with no directions until we happened upon an unobvious carpark......the staff were slow to greet us, only when I greeted them first ( as in hello on arrival and good morning at breakfast)...such a pity ...but the waited at dinner was brilliant (surname Morgan) funny and kind....

Good rooms and comfy beds. Plenty of room. Warm. Very good food. The staff were lovely, very helpful. Parking in the car park behind the Bear was free if you stayed overnight as we did. Would stay again if in the area.

You get what you pay for. A 300 year old town centre building trading at a budget price will never be luxurious. It was however clean and warm, the beds were comfortable and the breakfast food was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful. It served our purpose admirably.

Room was not serviced during our 2 night stay. Property is rather dated but in a very convenient location with ample free parking for hotel guests. Directions to parking entrance should be supplied since no access from street address of hotel.

Two couples, two rooms, one dog 😊 We checked in effortlessly, asked if we’d like to eat in the hotel or have breakfast. We declined both as we were visiting family nearby and ate with them. The rooms were extremely clean, yes very dated but with everything you would need, kettle, tea, coffee etc. A shower over a bath with plenty of hot water and a hairdryer was also provided. The only downside was when we came to check out the receptionist wanted to charge us more. We had prepaid but there system didn’t reflect this. After a while of showing them credit card statements and invoices she agreed that we had paid but still owed for a dog. As we only had one dog this was where the confusion came about. She thought we had one each. Anyway we did not let this mar our opinions of the hotel and will definitely stay again.

Be under no illusion, The Bear, is an old bear, perhaps a once well loved bear of high standing. But now it's a little dated. However it was clean, quiet and well located which met our needs.

Wouldn’t stay again!
We stayed for one night in room 28, the room itself was ok we had two beds one single and one double. The bathroom was awful, the flooring going up the walls was peeling off, the door had all white stuff and stains like tea all over the bottom, the bath plug hole was disgusting with someone else’s hair in there and the shower well the water was none existent even on full, the shower head must have been blocked as it just trickled out. The water was either stone cold or scorching hot so it was difficult to get under it. There were two radiators in the room but not much heat came out and the windows howled from the wind. The staff were friendly and advised there was a mini heater in the cupboard but we only found a fan! Room did have a tv, iron and ironing board, kettle, tea and coffee. There was a hairdryer but it wouldn’t dry even a short haircut!

Great value and nice beds.
Nice hotel, car park is around the back and is free for guests. Staff were welcoming and nothing was difficult. The bar had a good selection of wine, but not so many beers.

The whole place needs repairing. Light fittings hanging off the wall. TV doesn't work properly, bath tap takes 1 hr to run . Shower doesn't work.

Would use again.
Very good friendly service especially for evening meal. Good meal and breakfast. Good large comfortable bedroom though did struggle with the shower. Good parking and easy walk to the station.

Adequate
2nd time we've stayed. This time the room was a little bleak.. rawplugs in the walls where I assume pictures should've been, painting of ceiling/walls looked like it had been done in a hurry.. and quite noisy as single glazed windows offered no protection from noise outside. That said, the beds were comfortable and it was clean and lady on reception polite and helpful. Adequate for just a night.

Book your brekkie
very friendly and helpful staff, clean and perfectly located. You MUST book breakfast the night before, we didnt and on a sunday morning there is nothing to eat nearby. it seems a shame that the catering can not be a bit more flexible

Check in was good and staff friendly. Bed very comfy but room needs updating. Floorboard moving, plug socket coming off wall and bathroom mirror light falling off wall. Building works also being done which was not advised of at booking, got woken at 7.30 by work being done

We stayed in this hotel some years ago and were happy with the facility although it was, at that time, a little tired in appearance. My impression, on this occasion, is that the upkeep of this property has been neglected since our visit. In addition, our room on this occasion was very hot on arrival and the single fan in the room was unable to combat the same. On the plus side, the staff were very helpful and accommodating and the sheets and towels were clean and fresh.

Basic English inn.
This was a basic room at an inn. The floor was slanted and the toilet had 500 year old plumbing. The bed was comfy. The room was clean. Could walk to town and train station. Some of the staff were friendly. Others not so welcoming. Not a high level of customer service but a cheap place to sleep if you want to explore the surrounding countryside or take day trips by train.

Overnight pitstop
Have stayed here before so knew what to expect. Lovely, quirky, traditional hotel which is very well located & has good parking. Staff are very friendly and acconnodating. We would stay again.

Very very hot and no plugs near bed for the fan, and the shower had a ring of hot water and a ring of cold water - the mixer tap didn’t actually mix! Very clean, very comfortable and lovely staff.

Friendly atmosphere.
Enjoyed our stay. Staff were very friendly and chatty The food was very good. Although the appearance of the building could be classed as tired, it was very clean and comfy and also quiet. Good car parking. Also close to local shops and motorway access. There is also a large green park close by.

Did not expect to have to listen to music and drunken guests blasting out from an event going on underneath our room. The amount of bad language and drunken behaviour from the outside seating area was unacceptable on other nights.

Staff in the Greene Kings pub were really friendly and welcoming and the menu had plenty of choice. Food was very good. Really useful to have plenty of free parking onsite too. The room however and general feel of the accommodation was dated and dreery. Multiple doors and steps in different directions was confusing. My room had so many bumps, slants and angles it was like a crazy golf course. Furniture was ugly, scratched and damaged. Book here as a cheap (only cheap compared to usual weekend over charges) option and get what you pay for.
