The shuffling of Geisha echoes in this quiet ward between the Kamo River and leafy Higashiyama Mountains. Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha takes place here in the Gion entertainment district. Visit during July for the Gion Festival. To the east, the high wooden stage of the Kyomizu temple floats above the canopy while traditional shops line the stone steps of Ninzaka and Sannzaka avenues below.
