“Great location for Kansas City attractions”
My son and I enjoyed both Independence and Kansas City attractions from this hotel. Owners are very friendly and room was the cleanest hotel room I've ever experienced. Wi-fi (free) could have worked a little better in our room, but the "business center" was very comfortable and roomy. Would definitely stay here again. Comfortable beds.
“unusual and outstanding”
Higher Ground is an older hotel owned and run by a terrific couple. It is clean, has very nice furnishings including good antiques and well-selected art. The Truman Home is right across the street, the neighborhoold is filled with older and very well kept wood-facade homes from the early 20th century. Right around the corner is a fascinating Mormon temple. I didn't get to sample the breakfast, was too busy tail-gating with some other football fans who stayed there, but I bet it was good. Kay and his wife are great people, and they have put in a terrific landscaped garden with a walk and outdoor tables for their guests.
“Absolutely wonderful hotel!”
What a gem! The Higer Ground Hotel does not present itself well from the outside - but the rooms are amazing. The owners were present and were super accomodating, friendly and just plain nice people. The attention to detail in the rooms and cleanliness were superb. If you are tired of chain hotels give the Higher Ground a try.
“As Advertised”
Pleasant neigborhood hotel close to all Truman historical venues. Friendly staff -- breakfast buffet could use an upgrade.
“Funky place to stay”
We checked into Higher Ground and my wife was taken by the decor immediately: it's an old office building that's been converted to a hotel, so it maintains the concrete walls and the drop ceilings. However, the 1970's corporate look was softened by pastel colors in the hallways (lemon in one hall, lime in another), as well as comfortable common areas that feature sofas, wing chairs and HDTVs. The location is kind of cool, located down the street from the neat downtown Maple area and the owners are very personable. Felt like cozy small town USA in the middle of Independence. The breakfast was standard continental: cold cereal, fruit, yogurt, bagels, but they brew Seattle's Best, which was a saving grace. All in all, it was an enjoyable overnight stay. We'll be back.
“Good value for money”
Next to historical district and opposite Harry S. Truman home. Beautiful little garden for benefit of guests. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Hotel is a little quirky, but in a nice way. Plumbing a little noisy on occasion, but overall the hotel was certainly good value for the rate charged.

Nice neighborhood. Seemed very safe. Very nice people who run the hotel. Breakfast was from 7-9 while we were there. It was simple, but good. Cereal, bagels, etc. Right across the street from Truman house and within walking distance of some other Truman sites. Not super fancy, a bit older building, but kept up well. Actually, it has a sign that says it is a fallout shelter, which is cool. The room was nice. A bit older style building as I said, but still kept up well and clean. It was quiet, except for the toilet, which seemed to squeak when flushed. Not sure why. Didn't matter.
