Recreation
The resort occupies a scenic stretch of golden-sand beach. Although corals make swimming difficult off the resort's own beach, numerous water activities are available within two miles. Tunnels Beach is a popular swimming beach one mile from the resort, while coral-covered lava tubes and reefs make Tunnels Beach and Kee Beach, 2.75 miles from the resort, prime spots for snorkeling and diving.
Guests at Hanalei Colony receive preferred rates for tee times at two of Hawaii's top golf courses, both designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and located nine miles from the resort. The Prince Course offers 18 challenging holes of golf integrated with nature. The Makai Course consists of three nine-hole courses that can be played in any combination.
Hanalei Bay has one of the world's longest and most challenging surf breaks; winter is the high season for surfers. Anini Beach, 12 miles away, is one of Kauai's top spots for windsurfing, as is the more challenging Haena Beach, 1.75 miles from the resort. Other popular water activities available near the resort include fishing, rafting, ocean and river kayaking, and sailing.
The resort has an outdoor pool and spa tub; yoga classes are offered through the Hanalei Day Spa.

“Highly recommend”
Loved this place! Great location, on the beach, best part of the North Shore. Secluded enough for a low-key getaway but close enough to Hanalei to go out to eat and shop, etc. Room has all the amenities you need and the staff was helpful and friendly.
“Hanalei Colony Resort- A True Treasure”
What a treasure. I wish we had stayed longer and can't wait to visit again. We has a unit right on the ocean front. Very spacious for a family of 4. The staff are wonderful, the view is magnificient and the facilities superb. I will galdly come back. Great beaches nearby although there can be rough surf in the winter. The restaurants nearby can be expensive.
“Good stay in Hanalei”
One of the best values in the Hanalei area for the money. It is actually a condo that could accommodate whole bunch of people. Room is split in three by sideways doors.
“Unplugged and unspoiled”
The staff were very accommodating and helped us with activities and made our stay pleasurable. We had a great view and enjoyed just sitting and enjoying the peace and solitude. We enjoyed not having a phone or television in the room. It was nice to be "unplugged". The kitchen was well equipped and we had many delightful meals sitting on the lanai.
“Honeymoon Heaven”
A wonderful stay all around. If you are staying on Kauai's North Shore, this is the place.
“Very quiet and relaxing!”
I sat out on my deck, watched the surf, and felt the trade winds blow. It was truly paradise. This hotels is walking distance to Tunnels Beach, with some of the best snorkling on the island.
“Our Stay at Hanalei Colony Resort”
The resort is in the perfect location to get away from it all. We loved our time here. The only change I would have made was to get a unit that wasn't adjacent to the main parking lot. The master rooms are on the same side as the parking lot and the noise/privacy forced us to sleep in smaller bed in the unit. Other than that it was wonderful. We would highly recommend this resort.
“Magnificent panoramic ocean view in remote setting”
We stayed in one of the condos directly on the beach, and it's worth the extra money for the breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean. I was amazed by it every day. One caution: at least while we were there it was very windy, so sitting on the lanai (or beach) was not always possible. On the other hand, the wind made a great natural air conditioner and the room (which was spacious and very comfortable) never got hot. The outdoors part of the resort is nothing special, no great amenities; it's in the process of being modernized. The location is remote--you have to drive everywhere (other than to the restaurant that's on the grounds). But its remoteness is part of what we chose it for. It's near great snorkeling and the hike along the Napali coast. If you prefer a swanky hotel or a lot of condos around golf courses, stay in Princeville. If you want something more Hawaiian and low-key, stay in the Hanalei area. We were very happy with our choice.
“Great Location! North Shore!”
Right on the beach. Superb views. Huge Rooms. Full Kitchen. They clean the windows everyday. Fantastic Spa. So Relaxing.
“Hanalei Honeymoon”
My husband and I just returned from an incredible 8 day honeymoon at the Hanalei Colony Resort. We found the resort to be beautiful, peaceful, secluded, romantic, and convenient. Like many reviews have stated, the Hanalei Colony Resort is about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the charming town of Hanalei on the way to the Napali Coast Trail. If you're not up for the drive every day, then maybe this resort isn't the ideal spot for you, but we are adventurers, and enjoyed the drives we took exploring around and beyond the resort. And we felt like we were coming "home" every evening when we made our way back to the relaxing resort. The rooms are HUGE, especially when it's just two of you. We really liked having 2 bathrooms. The Mediterranean restaurant on-site is superb, and some of the best food we had on the island. Try the scallops...they're mouth-watering. We also enjoyed the expansive wine list AND the fact that the restaurant had the only bar on the island that we could find mojitos, and they were good! Having a spa at the resort was also wonderful, and we treated ourselves to a couples beachside massage. Most certainly worth it. The pool area is killer, and we enjoyed barbecuing on their convenient grills. The beach by the resort is beautiful to explore, but we weren't brave enough to jump in and snorkel. Our favorite spot for snorkeling was Anini beach, a little past Princeville. We would return to the Hanalei Colony Resort, and recommend it to our friends.
