“Better than expected”

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights in mid October 2010 and would definitely stay again. The description of it says "budget" but it had everything you need, is recently renovated and in very good shape and is extremely well located in Nantes. The staff speak some English and are helpful and friendly. Our room was attractive and we enjoyed the view of the church across the street (the bells don't ring too early in the morning). The staircase is a spiral - quaint but a little awkward if your suitcase is big or heavy. There is no elevator. The staff did offer to help. The neighbourhood has lots of services - laundromat, internet cafe, groceries, restaurants and bakeries. The hotel is three blocks north of the Nantes train station and within three blocks of the fine arts museum, the main cathedral, the splendid chateau (and museum) of the dukes of Brittany. Nantes has lots of other attractions such as the Jules Verne museum (Nantes is where he grew up) and the Machines de l'iIe which is totally unique.

“Fine except for 1 niggle”

Hotel du Grand Monarque (room 430) worked pretty well for my 2 nights in Nantes. Everything satisfactory except 1 gripe: I would have liked some drawers &/or shelves in the room. There were no drawers and just a single shelf, so it didn't really make sense to unpack my suitcase & put stuff away, which I found rather disappointing. There was enough space for a medium-sized chest of drawers in the room. Otherwise, everything fine.
