“PORT MERRION IN MADEIRA”
THIS IS THE BEST HOTEL WE HAVE STAYED AT ON ALL OUR TRIPS ABROAD. OUR FIRST IMPRESSION WAS WE HAD ARRIVED AT PORTMERRION IN WALES. IT HAD THE SAME LOOK AND FEEL.WHILST IN THE FIRST INSTANCE A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO FIND THE 8KM CLIMB UP THE MOUNTAIN ROAD IS SO WORTH IT AND EASY TO REMEMBER THERE AFTER. A VERY COMFORTABLE ROOM WELL APPOINTED AND SECURE. THE STAFF WERE OF THE TOP ORDER AND COULD NOT DO MORE. A SIMPLE BUT LOVELY TOUCH WAS EVERY DAY THE ROOM WAS CLEANED AND A CHOCOLATE PLACED SOMEWHERE ON THE BED FOR EACH PERSON.THE FOOD IN THE RESTAURANT WAS GOOD WITH TIME AND CARE PLACED ON SERVICE. IF WE HAD ANY IMPROVEMENTS TO ASK FOR THEN WE WOULD REQUEST THE POOL WAS OPENED LATER IN THE EVENING AS WE SPENT ALL DAY OUT AND OFTEN ARRIVED BACK AFTER 7PM WHEN THE POOL WAS CLOSED AND A NICE COOL SWIM WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD. A GOOD HOTEL FOR COUPLES AND A CAR IS A MUST. WE WOULD WITH OUT DOUBT STAY HERE AGAIN. WELL DONE ALL....
“underrated on expedia”
This hotel seems to be fairly new. All services are in perfect shape. Must be a 4-5 star rated hotel. Wish they had a coffee maker in the room and wireless internet, but these are minor details. Service and Restaurant are very good. Love the view over the sea, despite the fact that you are on 800m altitude over the sea. Staff is very nice, rooms are large, pool area is excellent
“Great for peace and quiet but further than you think from Funchal”
The hotel is in a gorgeous setting, very comfortable and clean. Be warned, it is approx 30 minutes drive from Funchal and you need to navigate narrow, winding, very steep roads. The hotel is spotlessly clean and leisure facilities are good but the weather can be changeable due to the altitude this far up the mountain. Tea and coffee in the room would have been appreciated. The only menu currently available in the evening is a table d'hote offering 2 choices of what can only be described as bizarre dishes! The staff are very friendly and efficient and are hoping the food offer will improve soon with the recent appointment of a new kitchen team. They are really missing a trick as there are no restaurants locally hence the need to drive to 30 + minutes for a decent meal.
“Up in the clouds”
This hotel is priced between Funcahl's 4* and 5* hotels. That's where it belongs. The rooms are similar to those in many other hotels, and are perfectly adequate. The food is okay, though not sensational. The staff are great. However, this hotel is characterised by its location. It is surrounded by trees, with views down towards the sea. For a place off the beaten track, this is it. However, that's also its downfall - it is 2600 feet above sea level, and often in the clouds. Frequently more can be seen up the mountains than down to the sea. It is several degress cooler than Funchal (up to 8 degrees C). The road up is tortuous - the directions given are accurate, but give little idea about how far up through seemingly endless communities you have to travel to reach the hotel. There is a minibus, but I think a car is a must for people staying here.
