“You should stay here!”
Hostal Oxam was a gem of a find! Sure it took a little bit of a find being behind a big iron steps and three wooden flights of stairs but the Hotel is well located on one of the busy streets in Chueca. It is a short walk to all the tourist attractions such as the old town, Royal Palace, Cathedral, Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum and the Thyssen Museum. The room was clean, large, had a welcome bottle of wine(!) and air conditioning. Other website reviews have mentioned noise as a concern but this wasn't apparent to us. The very cheap price included breakfast which was basic but satisfying. There's a fridge in case you want to have your own food but Madrid benefits from a host of good restaurants to suit any budget. I will definitely stay here next time I visit Madrid!
“Cool hotel in the heart of Chueca neighborhood”
Overall, we had a good experience at Oxum. The hotel really consists of a floor of rooms in an older building, and when we entered the building itself, we were a little concerned by the appearance. However, the floor of the hotel was completely redone, clean, and sharp-looking. Same with the rooms, which were modestly sized, but extremely efficient. The best thing about this hotel is that it is in a great, lively area of Madrid that is not touristy, but is a short walk to all the main tourist sites in the historic center. Our only minor complaint was with the service. There is no permanent reception, which requires some coordination by cell phone with the owner. Also, they put us in one room, then changed us to another room while we were out. We later realized that they had not transferred over some papers we had left in the original room. Fortunately they had them in their office, but we didn't know for sure until the owner showed up the next morning. Other than that, they were nice, and the rooms were clean. Go for it if you want to spend a little less and be in the heart of the action.
