“nice place to stay in Poitiers”

“Ideal halfway stopover between the channel and the Pyrenees”

Perfectly placed half way between the Channel ports and the Pyrenees, Poitiers is a good place to break the journey, and I absolutely recommend Le Grand Hotel. There is secure private indoor parking with access controlled from reception, well worth the small charge if you have an obviously well-laden UK registered car. The room was spacious, well-appointed and comfortable, breakfast exceeded expectations, and we noticed that the bar was particularly well-stocked with whisky - single malts, Irish, bourbons, you name it - you would have to stay a week to try them all. The staff were delightful, and for the rate we paid it was excellent value for money. The hotel is located right in the city centre, on a street full of restaurants. I especially recommend - le Bis' - just around the corner in Rue Saint-Nicolas. The €25 set menu was superb, very imaginative food beautifully presented in very chic surroundings.
