Grouse Mountain

From unspoilt nature to theatres in the sky, this popular four-season attraction right in the city's backyard has something to offer everyone.

Grouse Mountain has been a haven for both hikers and adventurers since 1894. When the world's first double chairlift was installed in 1949, the site underwent extensive upgrades and expansions and now offers a myriad of activities for nature lovers to experience the wondrous natural beauty of the mountain.

Snow sports lovers can take their pick of traditional snow activities, from skiing, snowboarding, to snowshoeing. Accessible by four chairlifts, Grouse Mountain has 26 ski runs, ranging from easy to black-diamond level for experts only, two terrain parks, and 10 kilometres of snowshoe trails. For beginners, there are many ski or snowboarding lessons on offer.

Families and those looking to unwind can go on a sleigh ride over the scenic winter terrain. Sled through the slopes in snow "limos" that come equipped with their very own experienced chauffeurs. In summer, book a zip line experience and glide over the canyons and forests or burn some calories on the Grouse Grind, a challenging 2.9-kilometre hiking trail up the face of the mountain.

Tap into the area's history and culture at the entertaining Lumberjack Show which features axe-throwing, log-rolling, an 18-metre tree climb, an exciting springboard chop, and more all rolled into a 45-minute show. Performances are held three times a day from May until October and are weather dependent, so check the current conditions on the Grouse Mountain website before visiting.

Animal enthusiasts should head over to the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife and the Birds in Motion show, both included in the Alpine Experience ticket. Learn about grizzly bears, wolves, ravens and other local wildlife through informative ranger talks and witness them in their natural environment.

Refuel at one of the many restaurants and cafés on-site serving up everything from quick snacks to luxurious five-star dining.

Being so close to the city centre makes the mountain a great option for a day trip.

Getting to Grouse Mountain is easy with buses running every half hour from downtown Vancouver.  It’s also a quick 15-minute drive from downtown. Prices and activities vary for the busy winter and slower summer seasons.
