Where to stay in Sukhothai?

About Sukhothai

Famous for its nearby ancient temples and attractions, Sukhothai is an interesting and historic city in the heart of Thailand. Its name means ‘dawn of happiness’ and visitors will certainly feel a sense of happiness when they visit here. Though Sukhothai’s old city draws in most of the crowds, the laid-back market atmosphere of New Sukhothai is worth a look too.

Don’t Miss

Just 20 minutes from the centre of Sukhothai are some of the most important ancient sites in Thailand.

The Historical Park is arguably Thailand’s most famous man-made attraction. Ruins like Wat Sri Chum, Wat Phra Phai Luang and Mat Mahathat are absolutely breath-taking. The best time to see the ruins and ancient Buddha relics is at dawn, when the sun’s orange glow makes the statues and structures look amazing.

A little further away are the ruins of Si Satchanalai Historic Park. The sites are historic, and the area receives far fewer visitors, making it a more subdued and quieter place for tourists.

In the centre of New Sukhothai, the fresh-food market is a great attraction to explore. There are so many fantastic local dishes to sample, especially in the early morning. This is also the best way to experience real Thai culture at its best.

Restaurants and Bars

Sukhothai is famous for its noodle dishes, but there are plenty of Thai dishes that visitors should sample while holidaying here. Also popular in the city is river fish, so dishes like tom yum pla and look chin pla are always great options. The night market is the place to visit for simple but delightful meals. Western food can be found, although it isn’t as widespread as Thai menus. Tourists won’t find a buzzing nightlife in Sukhothai, but there are several bars and pubs that offer a quieter night out.

Shopping

The Sukhothai Night Market and local markets are the best places to find fresh food, handicrafts, and a range of other items. Don’t forget to enjoy bargaining with the merchants. The city has a large electronics store known as Thonghcai Wittaya, which provides shoppers with cameras, phones, batteries, and a range of other electronic devices.
