To be fair, their rich broth and crunchy fried noodle topping warrants the fame the shop has attracted.<\/p>\n<p>Another good option, which has the added bonus of serving up a lot of other local specialties, is <strong>Samerjai <\/strong>(391 Charoenrat Road, 053 242 928).<\/p>\n<p>[one_third]<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Lam Duan Faham<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n352\/22 Charoenrat Road<br \/>\n053 243 519[\/one_third]<\/p>\n<p>[one_third]<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Samerjai<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n391 Charoenrat Road<br \/>\n053 242 928[\/one_third]<\/p>\n<p>[one_third_last][\/one_third_last]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Must-Try Food in Chiang Mai:\u00a0Sai Oua<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it comes to northern treats I confess a real weakness for <em>sai oua<\/em>, the intense herbal sausages usually served with an equally feisty chilli dip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/sai-ua-thai-herbal-sausage.jpg\" alt=\"sai-ua-thai-herbal-sausage\" width=\"800\" height=\"563\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>\u00a0CC3.0 \/\u00a0<a title=\"User:Takeaway\" href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/User:Takeaway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Takeaway<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most people head to <strong>Damrong<\/strong>, a small stall piled high with the meaty treats and found at Warorot Market (aka Kad Luang) on Wichayanon Road.\u00a0It\u2019s good, but I think <strong>Kad Ton Payom Market<\/strong> (intersection between Suthep and Canal Roads) is even better for getting your sausage to go, and it\u2019s also close to Nimmanhaemin Road, which is home to lots of cute cafes and cool boutiques.<\/p>\n<h4>Best Place for Sai Oua in Chiang Mai:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Northern food is all about hearty, spicy dishes, something you can sample in the rich and fatty <em>kaeng hung lay<\/em> (pork curry) and fiery dips, such as <em>nam prik num<\/em> (green chilli paste) and <em>nam prik ong<\/em> (tomato chilli paste), served at both <strong>Huen Phen<\/strong> (112 Rachamankha Road, 053 814 548) and <strong>Krua Petch Doi Ngam<\/strong> (267 Mahidol Road, 053 204 517).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Huen Muan Jai<\/strong> (24 Ratchaphruek Road, 053 404 998) has the added bonus of being located in a beautiful old teak-wood home, while <strong>Tong Tem Toh<\/strong> (11 Soi Nimmanhaemin 13, 053 894 701) offers a tasting plate, so you can sample those famous dips with the more-ish <em>cab moo<\/em> (pork crackling).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, our personal pick would probably be <strong>Huen Jai Yong<\/strong> (64 Moo 4, Buak Khang-Sam Kampaeng Road, 086 671 8710). The one positive of this economic imbalance is that the capital is blessed with an abundance of shophouses, restaurants and stalls selling grilled chicken and fiery som tam.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Must Try: Northern Som Tam Thai Papaya Salad<\/h3>\n<p>Papaya salad is, of course, omnipresent in the Land of Smiles, but the Isaan version tends to be more pungent than the sweet <em>som tam thai<\/em> you\u2019ve enjoyed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Bangkok.d178236.Destination-Travel-Guides\" target=\"_blank\">Bangkok<\/a>. That\u2019s thanks to the addition of <em>pla ra<\/em> (fermented fish sauce) or pickled rice-paddy crab. You\u2019ve been warned!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Best Places for Som Tam:<\/h4>\n<p>One Bangkok eatery offering a good introduction to the dish\u2019s real nuances is <strong>Somtum Der<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>which does intriguing regional variations such as a pasteurised version of som tam pla ra for the fainter of heart.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/somtum-der.jpg\" alt=\"somtum-der\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>CC 2.0 \/\u00a0<a class=\"owner-name truncate\" title=\"Go to Premshree Pillai's photostream\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/premshree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-track=\"attributionNameClick\" data-rapid_p=\"26\">Premshree Pillai<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jay Ouan Moo Jum<\/strong>\u00a0is a more down-and-dirty alternative, which has a good choice of som tam and some decadently fatty grilled pork neck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jay Kee<\/strong>\u00a0hidden away down a tiny alley is another solid option. As well as a potent <em>som tam pla ra<\/em> they\u2019re particularly known for that other omnipresent Isaan dish \u2013<em> grilled chicken<\/em>. While it doesn\u2019t quite match up to the grilled chicken found in <strong>Khao Suan Kwang<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Khon-Kaen-Hotels.d1833.Travel-Guide-Hotels\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Khon Khaen<\/strong><\/a> province, it\u2019s still very good and is positively drowning in garlic bits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/isaan-thai-grilled-chicken.jpg\" alt=\"isaan-thai-grilled-chicken\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" \/>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>CC 2.0 \/\u00a0<a class=\"owner-name truncate\" title=\"Go to Alpha's photostream\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/avlxyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-track=\"attributionNameClick\" data-rapid_p=\"47\">Alpha<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The smoky, juicy meat goes particularly well with the spicy chilli dip <em>nam jim jaew<\/em>. In fact, we\u2019d argue that jim jaew, a magical combination of fish sauce, dried chilli, shallots and lime, is pretty much the ideal accompaniment to anything grilled.<\/p>\n<p>The cosy <strong>Supanniga Eating Room<\/strong>\u00a0certainly makes an attractive spot to try Isaan-style grilled beef and pork, while long-term favourite <strong>Som Tam Nua<\/strong>\u00a0does a refreshingly zesty laab moo and a sour <em>tom saep<\/em> (spicy soup).<\/p>\n<p>To finish, you just have to try my personal favourite \u2013 <em>laab moo tord<\/em>.
