Our favourite restaurant for pad thai takes a little tracking down, though.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only open until 2pm Monday to Friday, <strong>Pad Thai Sala Daeng<\/strong> (Soi Sala Daeng 2, 84 899 5301) is tucked down a narrow alley behind the Silom Complex and is set in the rather grungy front yard of an old wooden house.Inside you\u2019ll find the always-smiling Khun Pranee slaving away over a hot wok, cooking hordes of office workers delicious, pan-fresh pad thai, with or without prawns or squid, at ridiculously low prices. Hot, sweaty and delicious.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pad-thai.jpg\" alt=\"Pad Thai\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Photo CC2.0:\u00a0<a class=\"owner-name truncate\" title=\"Go to Charles Haynes's photostream\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/haynes\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-track=\"attributionNameClick\" data-rapid_p=\"26\">Charles Haynes<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While in the neighbourhood pop over to Soi Convent and look for the unnamed stall in front of Thai restaurant Bua. Pick up some of their <em>khao mok gai<\/em> (chicken with saffron rice), which is best enjoyed with their clear and incredibly spicy chicken soup.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Or, head up the street for a bowl of <em>tom yam noodles<\/em> at the bustling lunchtime stall opposite Convento apartments. The dish is sour and spicy, while the accompanying deep-fried pork balls are a revelation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/massaman-curry-1.jpg\" alt=\"massaman-curry\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Photo CC2.0:\u00a0<a class=\"owner-name truncate\" title=\"Go to Marita's photostream\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marikoiv\/\" data-track=\"attributionNameClick\" data-rapid_p=\"26\">Marita<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While less common on the streets, <em>massaman curry<\/em> is still hugely popular. Lots of the high-end restaurants do it, but I love the southern-influenced version served up at <strong>Soul Food Mahanakorn<\/strong> (56\/10 Soi Sukhumvit 55, 02 714 7708), which uses lamb rather than the more standard chicken. Soul Food Mahanakorn is a great spot to try a lot of regional dishes because of the quality ingredients used. The potent Thai cocktails also help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To beat the Bangkok heat indulge in another classic, <em>kao chae<\/em>. This dish of rice in iced jasmine-scented water was appropriated by King Rama V from the Mon people to beat the heat at Songkran, but can be enjoyed year-round.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most authentic spots to sample this dish of rice served with a range of sides \u2013 such as dried fish and shrimp paste balls, shredded sweet pork, carved vegetables and sweetened fish \u2013 is the unassuming <strong>Khao Chae Mae Siri<\/strong> (Trok Krai Sri, Phra Sumen Road, 081 448 9924). A family-run venue, it uses a recipe that\u2019s been handed down through five generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/thai-mango-sticky-rice.jpg\" alt=\"Mango Sticky Rice\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of course you can\u2019t mention dessert without sampling that sweet and salty classic: mango sticky rice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While there\u2019s a good mobile stall on famous foodie street Sukhumvit Soi 38, we recommend crossing the road to <strong>Maewaree <\/strong>(1 Soi Sukhumvit 55, 02 392 4304). Southern cooking also features influences from the Chinese and Muslim populations in the region; one example is <em>gaeng keow wan <\/em>(green curry).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3606\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/thai-green-curry.jpg\" alt=\"Thai Green Curry\" width=\"800\" height=\"691\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Samui<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you\u2019re on Samui, then you simply must head to <strong>Kanom Jeen<\/strong> <strong>Pa Maitree<\/strong> (217\/2 Soi Maenam Beach 4, 077 247 075) to enjoy this pungent curry along with the owner\u2019s exquisite <em>kanom jeen<\/em> (fermented rice noodles), a real southern delicacy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another good spot to sample authentic southern recipes is the beachside <strong>Krua Chao Baan<\/strong> (438\/18 Moo 1, Maret, 077 418 589), which serves classics like yellow <em>gaeng som<\/em> (spicy sour soup), yellow curry and <em>hor mok talay<\/em> (steamed seafood in banana leaf).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hor-mok-thai-seafood.jpg\" alt=\"Hor Mok\" width=\"800\" height=\"593\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ko Seng <\/strong>(95 Moo 1, Tumboon Maenam, 077 425 365), is another must-try. Great for seafood, it\u2019s been around for 50 years and changes its menu depending on the day\u2019s catch.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Krabi<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you find yourself admiring the limestone karsts of Krabi, then make sure to drop by the legendary <strong>Ruen Mai<\/strong> (117 Moo 3 Krabi Road, Kao Thong, 089 288 3232).
