The highlight of a visit to the Chiang Mai Zoo and Aquarium<\/strong>, situated on the city outskirts in the shadow of Doi Suthep mountain, has to be getting up close to its giant pandas, Lin\u202fHui and Chuang Chuang and their daughter Lin Ping, who was born here in 2009.<\/p>\n

Other notable species found within the 200 acre park include the only Indian rhino in Thailand, Humboldt penguins, Cape fur seals and cute koalas. The aquarium, home to more than 2,000 marine species and Southeast Asia\u2019s longest sea tunnel, is also worth a look.<\/p>\n

Meet the Local Villagers<\/h2>\n

Situated around 60km from the <\/span>centre<\/span> of\u202fChiang\u202fMai, <\/span>Nong<\/span><\/strong>\u202fHoi\u202fRoyal Project<\/strong> (Mae Rim District) is an excellent day trip destination. Balanced on a lush hilltop plateau that is home to numerous\u202fHmong\u202f<\/span>Hilltribe<\/span> villages, it\u2019s famous for the small restaurant at the Mon\u202fCham\u202fcampsite. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This simple eatery consists of a series of simple bamboo huts perched on a ridge but offers spectacular views down into the often mist-shrouded valley below. The restaurant serves locally grown coffee and a range of Thai dishes using fresh produce grown at the Royal Project agricultural site.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The eclectic offerings at the newly opened\u202f<\/span><\/span>Ploen\u202fRudee\u202fFlea Market<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202fon Chang\u202fKlan\u202fRoad are well worth a look during the week. On Saturdays from around 4pm,\u202f<\/span>Wua<\/span> Lai\u202fRoad is transformed into a walking street featuring lots of food stalls and a host of local crafts and curios for sale. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The bigger and more vibrant Sunday market takes over the next day and stretches along <\/span>Ratchadamnoen<\/span> Road, between Wat <\/span>Phra<\/span> Singha<\/span> and <\/span>Thapae<\/span> Gate, from 3pm to midnight. Very popular and often very crowded, this market is a veritable treasure trove of unique art and craft products, though you\u2019ll also find\u202fplenty of restaurants,\u202fcafes\u202fand massage venues if you ever need a break from browsing.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Boutique Shopping<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you can\u2019t wait till the evening or aren\u2019t in\u202fChiang\u202fMai on a weekend, never fear, just head over to the hipster hood of <\/span>Nimmanhaemin<\/span><\/strong> Road<\/strong>. Located close to the university, this long street and its surrounding\u202f<\/span><\/span>sois<\/span><\/span>\u202fare home to a host of cool\u202fcafes, stylish fashion boutiques, trendy restaurants and contemporary galleries. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The sheer range of hip venues is pretty staggering, but if you don\u2019t have the time or energy to wander the whole road then make a beeline for\u202f<\/span><\/span>Soi\u202f1<\/span><\/span><\/a>, which is crammed with lots of quirky art, design and home decor boutiques.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tour a Temple in Chiang Mai<\/span><\/h2>\n

A notable legacy of\u202fChiang\u202fMai\u2019s proud history is the city\u2019s abundant temples \u2013 there are a staggering 300 to be found in or around the city walls. Of course, even the most devout visitor would struggle to get around them all, but the real standouts would have to include Wat Phra Singh<\/strong> at the end of Ratchadamnoen Road.<\/p>\n

Dating back to the early 1400s, it is one of the city\u2019s most famous religious sites and is home to an important Phra\u202fBuddha Sihing<\/i> or lion Buddha. Also of particular interest is the city\u2019s oldest temple, Wat Chiang Man on Ratchaphakhinai Road, which dates all the way back to 1296 and the exquisite silver ubosot <\/i>(ordination hall) of Wat Sri Suphan on Wua Lai Road.<\/p>\n
