It\u2019s perched on the serene hillside of a 19th-century fortress and is the perfect spot for a stroll with great city views. This five-tiered facade, with its portals, statues and engravings, is one of the most significant monuments to Christianity in Asia. St Joseph\u2019s seminary and church (<em>Rua do Seminario<\/em>) has the oldest dome ever built in China and its hybrid of baroque and Chinese architecture makes it a sight to behold.<\/p>\n<h4>Temples<\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>Historic Centre<\/strong> also includes some fabulous temples and Chinese mansions. <strong>A-Ma Temple<\/strong> (<em>Rua de Sao Tiago da Barra<\/em>), located on the southern side of the peninsula, was built before the Portuguese settlement in 1557. Mandarin\u2019s House (<em>10 Travessa de Antonio da Silva<\/em>), which features more than 60 rooms, has been restored to its original splendor, showcasing the exquisite lifestyle of a Chinese literati-merchant in the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Macanese Food Treats<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>As one of the world\u2019s oldest fusion cuisines, food in Macau\u00a0marries the best of Asian and European cooking, blending local ingredients with culinary inspirations from former Portuguese enclaves in Africa, India and Malaysia. Similar to Portuguese cuisine, Macanese dishes are meat-based but spiced with coconut, chilli and shrimp paste.<\/p>\n<p>The signature Macau dish\u00a0is juicy African chicken, which uses coconut milk for the basting sauce. <i>Bacalhau<\/i> (cod fish) and stuffed crab are also Macanese delicacies. You\u2019ll immediately see <strong>Sam Seng Temple<\/strong>, a tiny shrine built in 1865 and the well-kept <strong>Tam Kung Temple<\/strong>, located at the end of the road.<\/p>\n<p>The lovely <strong>Chapel of St Francis Xavier<\/strong> (<em>Avenida de Cinco de Outubro<\/em>) was founded in 1928 to honour the pioneering missionary, Francis Xavier, and is a dominant presence in the village.<\/p>\n<h4>Portugese Egg Tarts<\/h4>\n<p>And finally, nope we didn&#8217;t forget about Macau&#8217;s famous Portugese egg tarts. Keep the best for last! Head to <strong>Lord Stow\u2019s Bakery<\/strong> (<em>105 Rua da Cordoaria<\/em>), which serves freshly-made pastries and sandwiches. Grab a seat out on the wonderfully relaxing patio and make sure you order the\u00a0delicious egg tarts.
