If you\u2019re planning to\u00a0splurge while visiting the Spanish capital Madrid<\/a>, then grab your euros and follow my guide to the best places to buy locally made clothes, handcrafted accessories and vintage\u00a0homewares, not to mention a few stops to pick up souvenirs and snacks along the way. Here’s a Madrid itinerary designed for a day of shopping in Madrid that also has you experiencing the wonderful charm of the city.<\/p>\n

\"shopping3\"Shopping in Madrid\"shopping3\"<\/h2>\n

9am: Casa\u00a0Hernanz\u00a0for Iconic Spanish Espadrilles<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"Espadrilles\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Sure, you could slip on your favourite heels but I like my glamour to come with a side of comfort! So, the first stop on my itinerary is\u00a0Calle\u00a0de Toledo 18<\/strong>, where the\u00a0Hernanz\u00a0family have been handcrafting espadrilles for more than 150 years. Hard-working peasants traditionally wore these sandals, but today you are just as likely to spot people strutting their stuff in these colourful creations on luxury yachts and along bar-lined boulevards. Get there when the workshop opens as there\u2019s nearly always a queue thanks to its old-school prices, which range from \u20ac20 to \u20ac60.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

10.30am: Designer Threads in Trendsetting\u00a0Chueca<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For cutting-edge fashion by local and international designers, it has to be the bustling Chueca district<\/a> and the independent boutiques along the narrow avenues that lead off Fuencarral and Hortalezastreets. For a fabulous frock, check out Basque designer Fernando Lemoniez\u2019s boutique (CalleArgensola\u00a017), where classic tailoring and modern fabrics, colours and patterns combine to create flattering, ultra-feminine dresses.<\/p>\n

To add a few accessories, I go for a browse through the leather handbags, clutches, belts and shoes sold at\u00a0Malababa\u00a0(Santa Teresa 5). When I\u2019m done, I reward my efforts with a mid-morning snack at Mama Framboise (Callede Fernando VI) \u2013 the patisserie\u2019s fruit tarts,\u00a0macarons\u00a0and eclairs give any in Paris a run for its money.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

12pm: Window Shopping with Salamanca\u2019s Chic Set<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Time to see how the other half live with a stroll through the city\u2019s chicest neighbourhood. With luxury brands \u2013 think Chanel, Prada and Jimmy Choo \u2013 rubbing shoulders with famous Spanish designers such as Adolfo Dominguez, the area is high-fashion heaven. But instead of maxing out my credit card, I prefer to treat the barrio\u2019s grand boulevards and futuristic skyscrapers as the backdrop to my very own catwalk show and as a place where I can gain inspiration from the chic set.<\/p>\n

Also, this way I can save my Salamanca spending for the slightly more down to earth Federica & Co (Calle\u00a0de Hermosilla 26). This \u2018micro-mall\u2019 hidden in a secret leafy garden is bursting with understated but seriously stylish knits,\u00a0homewares\u00a0and jewellery.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2pm: Vintage Jumble in a Bookish Barrio<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There\u2019re only so many clothes one wardrobe can fit, so before I go overboard, I make for the evocatively named El Barrio de Las Letras (Literary Quarter) to poke around the growing number of vintage furniture and antique stores. I\u2019m tempted to take a siesta, but instead opt for a glass of sherry from one of the aged barrels at La Venencia (Calle\u00a0de Echegaray 7) \u2013 one of author Ernest Hemingway\u2019s favourite haunts when he was in town.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4pm: Spanish Souvenirs\u00a0from Madrid<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"Museo<\/a>The Museo del Prado<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m suffering from slight shopping fatigue, so I swap window gazing for admiring works by some of the world\u2019s renowned artists at the impressive\u00a0Prado Museum\u00a0(Paseo del Prado). I forget about Gucci and Versace for a few hours in favour of Goya and\u00a0Vel\u00e1zquez,\u00a0before resuming my retail therapy at\u00a0the fabulously kitsch emporium Objetos de Arte Toledano, situated opposite the entrance to the museum. A perfect place to pick up souvenirs, it\u2019s a traveller\u2019s treasure trove selling black-and-white pearls from the island of Majorca<\/a>, flamenco-dancing dolls, intricate lace fans and impressive metal armour and swords from the nearby city of Toledo.<\/p>\n

7pm: Multi-Storey Munchies<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Having made a quick detour to drop off my purchases at my hotel, the shopping extravaganza in Madrid takes a culinary curve at Mercado de San Ildefonso (Calle\u00a0Fuencarral\u00a057). Yup, it’s time for some Spanish food.<\/p>\n

Located in the trendy neighbourhood of\u00a0Malasa\u00f1a, this\u00a0three-level emporium takes its inspiration from Madrid\u2019s traditional food vendors and gives them a modern twist. Having nibbled on plates of chorizo, squid and tortillas from the 18 specialty stalls, I head to the outdoor patio to watch the sun set over Madrid.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s open to 1am, so I could make one of the three on-site bars my next pit stop, but instead I decide to save the last of my euros and pull up a stool in the cavernous Mercado San Miguel, located next to the grand\u00a0Plaza Mayor<\/a>, a large arcade square completed in the early 17th century. With a glass of sparkling cava in one hand and a selection of chocolates in the other, it\u2019s the perfect place to glean shopping tips from the locals as they gesticulate wildly while haggling over their groceries.<\/p>\n

And the evening comes to a close then, after\u00a0a lovely day experiencing the Spanish culture while shopping in Madrid for everything from souvenirs to shoes. Satisfied.<\/p>\n

[tab title=”Best Time to Visit Madrid<\/strong>” icon=”entypo-light-up”] Madrid Weather:<\/strong>\u00a0Spring (from April to June) and early autumn (from September to October) are the best times of the year to visit Madrid as the weather is still warm but not like it is in summer. The\u00a0weather in Madrid\u00a0during winter tends to be cold (the average temperature in January is 6\u00b0C) and generally dry.<\/p>\n

Madrid\u2019s largest festival \u2013 Fiesta de San Isidro \u2013 sees crowds wearing traditional Spanish dress descend on the city in May, with lots of live music and dance performances to enjoy. Columbus Day on 12 October is a national holiday and a special parade led by the military and royal family takes place along Madrid\u2019s Plaza de Colon.[\/tab]<\/p>\n

When you wake up feeling rested and revived, you\u2019ll find cultural attractions, such as the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, just a short stroll away.<\/p>\n

If you do visit during summer, you\u2019ll appreciate the rooftop pool with views of Almudena Cathedral at\u00a0Hotel Emperador<\/a>, while budget-conscious travellers who don\u2019t want to compromise on design-led digs should check out\u00a0One Shot Prado 23<\/a>.<\/p>\n
