About 100km away, in an area covering 3500 square kilometres of desert and mountainous terrain, 100 atomic bombs were tested above ground until the 1992 moratorium. To this day, the testing site remains pockmarked with craters.<\/p>\n<p>Equally surreal is how the city\u2019s casinos threw dawn parties to celebrate these explosions. You\u2019d be trying your luck at the gambling tables and then a big flash would be seen in the distance followed by a mushroom cloud. Despite its dangers, the bombs were a popular drawcard and the city even had a Miss Atomic Bomb pageant \u2013 which, yes, inspired The Killers\u2019 song of the same name (the band\u2019s from Las Vegas, too).<\/p>\n<p>Visit the Nevada National Security Site on an official tour, which is run by the US Department of Energy\u2019s Nevada Field Office once a month. It fills up well in advance, so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nv.energy.gov\/outreach\/tours.aspx\">book ahead<\/a>. The<strong> Jurassic Coast <\/strong>is a World Heritage Site that stretches 155km from East Devon to Dorset in the south of England (you can walk its entire length via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southwestcoastpath.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">South West Coast Path<\/a>). This area has a story that encompasses 250 million years of the Earth\u2019s history, including the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.<\/p>\n<p>Many museums and visitor centres along the coast have awe-inspiring exhibitions of prehistoric monsters, such as a 2.4m-long skull of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jurassiccoast.org\/rocks-and-fossils\/fossils-the-history-of-life\/809-weymouth-bay-pliosaur\">pliosaur<\/a> \u2013 reportedly the largest sea creature that ever lived \u2013 which is on display at the Dorset County Museum. Housed in the Institute of Neurological Science in the capital city of Lima, this museum has been slowly collecting brain and fetus samples since 1947 and has amassed more than 3000 specimens.<\/p>\n<p>Why go? These samples exhibit abnormalities caused by neurological diseases, psychiatric disorders and substance abuse, ranging from alcoholism to Alzheimer\u2019s and mad cow disease. There are other larger collections in the world, but none that allow public viewing. It\u2019s pretty useful, I\u2019d say, if you want to know what your brain <em>shouldn<\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><em>t<\/em>\u00a0look like\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stargaze in the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Atacama<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Desert, Chile<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-7296 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/San-Pedro-De-Atacama.jpg\" alt=\"San-Pedro-De-Atacama\" width=\"936\" height=\"526\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been said that there\u2019s no better place on Earth to stargaze than in the arid moon-like landscape of the Atacama Desert.<\/p>\n<p>Most tourists base themselves in the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/San-Pedro-De-Atacama.d500224.Destination-Travel-Guides?rfrr=TG.Destinations.City.POI.2.1\">San Pedro de Atacama<\/a> and the go-to man seems to be French astronomer Alain Maury, who has been running stargazing tours since 2003 with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceobs.com\/en\">San Pedro de Atacama\u00a0Celestial Explorations (SPACE)<\/a>. Another recommended outfit is <strong>Ahlarkapin<\/strong>, which provides a similar experience with a twist: it\u2019s run by the local indigenous people and combines scientific astronomy with Andean history.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for something more cutting edge, there\u2019s the <strong>Atacama\u00a0Large Millimetre\/submillimetre Array (ALMA) observatory<\/strong>, which is located 5000m above sea level and is the largest land-based observatory ever built, or the <strong>Paranal\u00a0Observatory<\/strong> on the Cerro Paranal mountain. Like Brightman, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/starcity-tours.com\/\">train as a cosmonaut as part of a tour at Star City,<\/a> which is about 48km outside of Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>The closed town of Star City has a long history: it\u2019s where Russian cosmonauts have lived and trained since the 1960s. Though it\u2019s been open to tourists since the 1990s, back then it was a top-secret military site.
