The Cameron Highlands<\/a> and\u00a0Genting\u00a0Highlands<\/a> in the state of\u00a0Pahang<\/a> are two popular escapes from the sweltering heat of Malaysia\u2019s urban centres for locals and tourists alike.<\/p>\n

Beyond their similarities, both in fact offer\u00a0very different pleasures. Which one to visit all depends on what kind of experience you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n

\"outdoors\"<\/p>\n

Cameron Highlands<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Cameron Highlands is an old British outpost in the verdant hills of\u00a0Pahang<\/a>, first discovered in 1885 by William Cameron, who was a surveyor of the colonial government. Compared to the\u00a0Genting\u00a0Highlands, its attractions are of a more earthly nature.\"Cameron-Highlands-44004\"<\/p>\n

Rafflesia<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Venture into the surrounding\u00a0rainforest\u00a0via a four-wheel drive vehicle to catch a glimpse of the\u00a0Rafflesia<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 otherwise known as the \u2018corpse flower\u2019 for its pungent smell.<\/p>\n

Jim Thompson Cottage<\/h4>\n

Otherwise, retrace the steps of Jim Thompson<\/strong>, a businessman and former World War II operative of the United States\u2019 Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency). He seemingly vanished into thin air one evening in March 1967 when he left the Moonlight Bungalow guesthouse (today the\u00a0Jim Thompson Cottage) for a walk in the woods.<\/p>\n

Outdoor Adventures<\/h4>\n

Alternatively, try walking up the Gunung Brinchang<\/strong> mountain, which sits 2000 metres above sea level, trek through the fairy-tale-like Mossy Forest, or pay a visit to\u00a0the villages of the Orang<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Asli<\/em>\u00a0(indigenous Malaysians).\"Cameron-Highlands-44001\"<\/p>\n

Tea Plantation Tours<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The cool weather here facilitates the production of\u00a0Boh\u00a0tea<\/a>,\u00a0strawberries<\/a>,\u00a0lavender<\/a> and\u00a0honey<\/a>, among other things and you can visit the farms where these items are produced. Many are located in the agricultural area of\u00a0Kea\u00a0Farm, north of the\u00a0Brinchang\u00a0district.<\/p>\n

Tea and Scones<\/h4>\n

When you\u2019re ready to retire indoors, satisfy your sweet tooth with freshly baked scones and jam at the Smokehouse Hotel and Restaurant<\/a>, a colonial-era bungalow in\u00a0Tanah\u00a0Rata.<\/p>\n

Weather in Cameron Highlands:<\/b><\/p>\n

The Cameron Highlands are generally cool and a little damp, but still enjoyable all year round. The dry season runs from February to April.<\/p>\n

From\u00a0Kuala\u00a0Lumpur, you can hire a car and drive the 3 hours<\/strong> yourself to the Cameron Highlands, or take a bus<\/strong> with\u00a0Unititi\u00a0Express or\u00a0Kurnia\u00a0Bistari. [\/tab] [\/tabs]<\/p>\n

Genting<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Highlands<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you are looking to amp your holidays up a notch,\u00a0Genting\u00a0offers a little slice of\u00a0Las\u00a0Vegas on a mountain<\/a> \u2013 albeit a paler version \u2013 only an hour away from\u00a0Kuala\u00a0Lumpur.\"first-world-genting-aerial-view\"<\/p>\n

Resorts World<\/h4>\n

Resorts World\u00a0Genting\u00a0is an integrated resort 1800 metres above sea level with a casino, six hotels (including the First World Hotel<\/a>, which until 2008 was the largest one in the world), theme parks, restaurants, shopping outlets and entertainment venues where legends such as Lionel Richie and Rod Stewart have performed.<\/p>\n

Outdoor Activities<\/h4>\n

But the Genting Highlands are not just about bright lights and high-rolling gambling. Descend the mountain and you\u2019ll find other Genting attractions, too. If you\u2019re looking for outdoor physical activities, the surrounding forests in\u00a0Awana\u00a0Eco Park<\/strong> offers trekking, mountain biking, horseback riding, abseiling and golfing.\"ChinGiant Buddha \/ CC by 3.0 \/\u00a0Carla Cometto<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

You can also visit the Chin\u00a0Swee\u00a0Cave Temple<\/strong>, which was built by the late Genting founder, Tan Sri\u00a0Lim Goh Tong, and reportedly took almost two decades to complete.<\/p>\n

History<\/h4>\n
