The hills might be alive with the sound of music, but there\u2019s plenty more to excite your senses in Austria. From skiing to running naked into hot springs to visiting the birthplace of Mozart, here\u2019s how to enjoy 10 of your precious winter days in Austria.<\/p>\n

Days 1-4: Strap on the Skis<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are six ski areas all within a couple of hours from Vienna (your first port of call).\u00a0Semmering<\/a>\u00a0is the best known, has a vertical of just under 1000m and is roughly an hour\u2019s drive from Vienna.<\/p>\n

M\u00f6nichkirchen \u2013 Mariensee<\/a>, an hour southwest of Vienna, is another popular, small resort with a 967m drop, and\u00a0Sankt Corona am Wechsel<\/a>\u00a0is also just as close on the Lower Austria border with Styria. Snuggle up at nights with panoramic views and well-deserved mugs of gl\u00fchwein. Bliss.<\/p>\n

Day 5: Get to Grips with Vienna<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When you\u2019ve hung up the skis, it\u2019s time to head back to Vienna for a dose of culture. Birthplace of the waltz, there are also some great performances at the\u00a0State Opera<\/strong>, the\u00a0Konzerthaus<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Musikverein<\/strong>\u00a0during the winter months.<\/p>\n

Book your tickets to the shows when you first arrive to ensure you get good seats. Buttering up ticket sellers with some local lingo like \u201cgruss gott\u201d, which means \u201chello\u201d might help seal the deal.<\/p>\n

Explore\u00a0Vienna<\/a>\u00a0on foot by taking a walk along the Ringstrasse (Ring Road), originally erected during the 13th century to replace the city walls. An afternoon stroll will take you past historical sights and buildings like the Neo-Renaissance-style State Opera, the Parliament, the new baroque Burgtheater and the Museum of Fine Arts \u2013 worth a stop inside.<\/p>\n

Day 6: Ride the Big Wheel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The art-nouveau style in here looks even more beautiful with the 400-plus tropical butterflies and rainforest setting. Take your time, then head out for another stroll, picking up a coffee from Caf\u00e9 Central, once frequented by Freud.<\/p>\n

To fly as high as a butterfly and set your eyes on the Danube River, head to the\u00a0Riesenrad<\/a>\u00a0(Giant Wheel) \u2013 once the tallest extant Ferris wheel in the world! After this, head back to your hotel to get ready to catch your evening arts or theatre performance.<\/p>\n

Day 7: Set Your Sights on Salzburg<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Trains<\/a>\u00a0from Vienna to Mozart\u2019s city, Salzburg<\/a>, take approximately 2.5 hours and run almost 24 hours a day. It\u2019s the most popular way to see the stunning sights along the way, and in winter, a snow-covered Salzburg is as enchanting as a scene from a storybook.<\/p>\n

Go early to give yourself more time in the city. Once you\u2019ve settled into your hotel, grab some lunch, then it\u2019s time to look around.<\/p>\n

\"Mirabell\"Getreidegasse,<\/p>\n

Spend the first afternoon wandering the streets and checking out the festively decorated shops of Getreidegasse<\/strong> and the Goldgasse<\/strong>. You won\u2019t be able to miss the markets in peak travel season.<\/p>\n

Salzburger Christkindlmarkt am Domplatz<\/a>\u00a0is the most famous Christmas market and starts welcoming shoppers five weeks before Christmas. You might have to deal with crowds, but it\u2019s worth it for the caramelised nuts, traditional Lebkuchen and steaming mugs of gl\u00fchwein for dinner.<\/p>\n

Day 8: Go From Tourist to Local<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You could participate in the usual tourist activities today, like\u00a0visiting Mozart’s house<\/a>\u00a0and taking\u00a0The Original Sound of Music tour<\/strong>. We know you would have researched these already, but our advice for Mozart\u2019s place is to get there early. It\u2019s smaller than you think.<\/p>\n

Today is all about doing what the locals do, and they really enjoy running naked through the snow into a sauna. The\u00a0Felsentherme<\/strong>\u00a0is a gargantuan spa resort featuring different spa zones, geysers and a thermal waterfall. Sitting in the clouds, surrounded by Gastein\u2019s mountains, you might be freezing your bits off at times but the scenery is mind-blowing.<\/p>\n

Day 9: Feast on Tradition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You might enjoy some shopping time today since you\u2019ve already done your reconnaissance of what\u2019s on offer. Once you\u2019ve dropped your bags back at the hotel, check out a\u00a0Salzburger Adventsingen<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a nativity play performed by local kids in regional dialects.<\/p>\n

Who says you can\u2019t make lunch and dinner last all afternoon? A great way to experience the variety of tastes in Salzburg is to restaurant-hop along Getreidegasse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Try having something different in each place (with a few drinks in between). A German appetizer, a Japanese soup, a French salad and a Chinese dessert \u2013 all these things are possible and each comes with a different atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Got more time?\u00a0You could take another three or four days to head from Salzburg to Hallstatt, explore the Danube Valley, Tyrol and Bavaria, or even take a daytrip to Bratislava. Once you\u2019ve said \u201cgruss gott\u201d to Austria, you won\u2019t want to say goodbye.<\/p>\n

Weather in Austria:<\/strong> If skiing is on your agenda in Austria, peak travel season is between Christmas and late March. For the warmest weather, come back between May and September when temperatures are perfect for planning hikes and other outdoor activities away from the slopes.<\/p>\n

Best time to visit Austria:<\/strong> Salzburg gets quite busy and prices go up in August around the\u00a0Salzburg Festival<\/a>. The same applies to Vienna in May and June for The\u00a0Wiener Festwochen<\/a>\u00a0(Vienna Festival). If you don\u2019t like crowds, always check exact dates for festivals in Austria before you book.[\/tab]<\/p>\n
