Being in the business of helping people go places means that Expedia gets to see first-hand what\u2019s trending in travel \u2013 from the top cities Singaporeans travelled to, to up-and-coming destinations to put on your bucket list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To gain a deeper insight, Expedia analysed thousands of data points as part of our annual <strong>Year in Review trends report<\/strong> to find out what types of travel experiences Singaporeans are after. 2018 has been an exciting year for travel in Singapore, with remarkable growth seen in both internal and outbound travels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-37083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image-2-800x440-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2018, frequent short getaways remained popular among Singaporeans, with an average of <strong>4.6 overseas trips<\/strong>, lasting an average of <strong>2.3 nights<\/strong>. While the season of giving (December)<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> is the biggest trigger for Singaporeans\u2019 wanderlust, the time for new year resolutions (January)<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> was the least popular booking month.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-37085\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image-3-800x445-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Source: Expedia.com.sg flight demand between 1 January \u2013 20 November 2018<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year, Singaporeans chose to stay closer to home, with <strong>Asian cities topping the list of top 10 most visited destinations<\/strong>. Based on Expedia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Flights?mcicid=social.vf\">flight<\/a> data, cities like <em>Kuala Lumpur<\/em>, <em>Bangkok<\/em> and <em>Hong Kong<\/em> topped the list as Singaporeans\u2019 most favourite destinations. But what do these cities have in common? Food and shopping! As cities famous for two of Singaporeans\u2019 favourite pastimes, it\u2019s unsurprising that Singaporeans keep going back for more!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-37084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image-4-800x630-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"630\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aside from filling their stomachs and getting our retail therapy fix, Singaporeans are also <strong>revving to explore the roads less travelled<\/strong>. Smaller cities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/lp\/flights\/sin\/jjn\/singapore-to-quanzhou\"><em>Quanzhou in China<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/lp\/flights\/sin\/crk\/singapore-to-angeles-city\"><em>Angeles City in Philippines<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/lp\/flights\/sin\/kua\/singapore-to-kuantan\"><em>Kuantan, Malaysia<\/em><\/a>, have seen more than double growths in travel demand for the year. <em>Translation: if you want to visit these trending travel destinations, book now, before everyone catches on!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-37086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/image-5-800x557-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"557\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not every trip requires months of planning and deliberation. Sometimes Singaporeans just want a quick and easy escape without the hassle of leaving this sunny island. This year, we saw the growth of staycations, with Singaporeans taking an average of 2.4 local staycays, a significant increase in year-on-year growth for local hotel bookings made since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>We also combed through our data to look at top properties Singaporean&#8217;s booked to stay at in 2018 and the top 5 are, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Kuala-Lumpur-Hotels-Resorts-World-Genting-First-World-Hotel.h2866453.Hotel-Information\">Resorts World Genting &#8211; First World Hotel in Genting Highlands<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Johor-Bahru-Hotels-KSL-Hotel-Resort.h5201366.Hotel-Information\">KSL Hotel and Resort in Johor Bahru<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Singapore-Hotels-Hotel-Boss.h13307850.Hotel-Information?regionId=11702&amp;semcid=SG.UB.GOOGLE.PT-c-EN.HOTEL&amp;semdtl=a1630615487.b124480524689.r1.g1dsa-285723624938.i146471069015.d1274063453403.e1c.j19062530.k1.f11t1.n1.l1g.h1b.m1&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6Pzd1qar3wIVDA4rCh2K6ArKEAAYASAAEgJ_3fD_BwE\">Hotel Boss in Singapore<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Malacca-Hotels-Hatten-Hotel-Melaka.h5494570.Hotel-Information\">Hatten Hotel in Malacca;<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.sg\/Bangkok-Hotels-Glow-Pratunam.h5248530.Hotel-Information?regionId=11702&amp;semcid=SG.UB.GOOGLE.PT-c-EN.HOTEL&amp;semdtl=a1630615484.b124480524089.r1.g1dsa-286355682228.i146469775980.d1270359556870.e1c.j19062530.k1.f11t1.n1.l1g.h1b.m1&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIw7ubl6er3wIVjh0rCh1YEAIyEAAYASAAEgKkXfD_BwE\">Glow Pratunam in Bangkok<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We looked at accommodation types that saw increased demand this year, and the results show travelers are increasingly interested in staying\u00a0somewhere novel or unique during their getaways. \u201cTentalows\u201d (a cross between a tent and a bungalow, usually outfitted with plumbing and other modern-day comforts), agritourism properties (think farms, ranches, etc.), castles and chalets all saw increased demand this year. But when it\u00a0comes to preferred property type, Hotels continue to be a top choice amongst Singaporean travellers, followed by Chalets and Vacation Rentals.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s on your travel wish-list for 2019?
