Circular Quay - The Rocks

Once frequented by sailors, rogues and scoundrels, Sydney's oldest district is now a firm favourite with foodies, shoppers and history buffs.

The Rocks is intrinsically linked to Australia’s history, as it’s where the First Fleet voyagers stepped ashore back in 1778. Once the haunt of sailors and pirates, today, The Rocks is an upmarket district famed for its fine-dining establishments and luxury shopping venues. Located under the looming visage of Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks is a fantastic place to soak up some of Australia’s contemporary culture while relishing the fusion between past and present. If you’re up for an indulgent treat, the region has plentiful classy restaurants, chic bars and traditional pubs. Culture vultures and art lovers will find plenty to relish in The Rock’s collection of galleries and museums. And as a constant reminder of the region’s cultural heritage, much of the local entertainment is housed within characterful restored 19th-century warehouses. The Rocks Discovery Museum charts the history of the region, right back to the indigenous people who originally settled in the area. An exhibit marks the importance of the 1970s protest movement which ultimately preserved the district’s heritage and prevented it from being redeveloped and modernised. The museum is housed within a beautiful, traditional 1850s sandstone warehouse, which uses modern technology and interactive exhibits to deliver a memorable, informative experience. The region is also an ale lovers’ paradise as The Rocks is home to a collection of historic pubs. Foodies will love the restaurants serving traditional Australian fare, as well as international delights from the four corners of the globe. To work off any overindulgence, the 90-minute Rocks Walking Tour is a great way to get some fresh air. If you have an interest in the supernatural, join the Rocks Ghost Tour, which tells tales of convicts, murders and hauntings in the area. More relaxing journeys can be had aboard one of the many cruises which operate out of Sydney Harbour. For souvenirs, the Rocks Market is crammed with stalls selling locally made jewellery, art and artisan products. The Rocks is next to Circular Quay, Sydney’s public transport hub. Metered parking is available, but travelling by foot is probably the best way to get around.
