High on a hill overlooking the island Tanawin is away from the crowds but you rely on the hotel shuttle which runs every hour to take you down to the main area. There are bicycle taxis if you want to come back at a different time but these often had trouble getting up the hill. The hotel is small which gives it a family feel. Small restaurant but adequate. Pool is nice but the grounds are small. Each of the hotel rooms are different. We had a family2 bedroom which was huge and had all cooking facilities. Beds are good. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Booked most of our activities through them and had no problem. Also make sure you book your pick up from the airport through the hotel because it is quite an adventure getting there- short bus trip , then on to a very basic outrigger type boat, short bus trip again then on to another bus which takes you up to Tanawin. All done with no problems and make sure you have local money for tipping.
I LOVED my stay at Hotel Soffia. I didn't want the crowds and the noise so I took a chance on Soffia. It was perfect for me. Yes, it was further away than most of the other hotels and not on the beach but I had great views, peaceful, quiet evenings, great food and the staff was really really nice. The coolest thing about Soffia was every hour on the hour the shuttle took whoever wanted to go down to D'Mall. This was a great service. And when you were finished on the main beach just be at the bus stop at D'Mall at :15 after the hour and the bus was there to take you back to Soffia! And... Soffia's location made it absolutely perfect for short trips to Puka Beach where it was way less crowded. I was much happier there than the overcrowded main beach where it was impossible to get that postcard shot of the sunset without 50 people in your picture.
"Grand Vista is an apt name for an amazing location, view, and room."
The rooms are amazing. Most or all have private pools by the balcony looking over the ocean. It's quiet and very pretty. The service is outstanding. The location is about 15 minutes from all the action which is really quite nice. The dinner food is not great, however, it has a fine breakfast buffet. I would certainly stay here again. Loved it.
"The Astoria Boracay is a diamond among the rough."
From the moment my family arrived until we checked out the Astoria treated us like royalty. The hotel staff went above and beyond our expectations to make us feel comfortable, relaxed, and entertained throughout the week.
In particular, Hazar greeted us at the dock in the Astoria van and drove us to the hotel. He filled us in on where to eat, what to see, and what to do during our stay. After following his recommendations we learned that he gave us great advice. Later in the week Hazar even gave us a private tour of the island!
The breakfast buffet at the hotel was exceptional. Rosanne and John John made sure we were comfortable and started every one of our days with a big smile and pleasant conversation. Both of them went out of their way to check on us when they saw us outside of the restaurant as well.
Our stay at the Astoria was fantastic. I have paid much more money for hotel rooms and received far less service. I would recommend the Astoria Boracay as the perfect hotel destination for a vacation in Boracay.
Room on 4th floor did not have free WIFI as promised due to incompetence of on-site technician. Since this was the most important thing for us, we asked to be moved to cheaper room on second floor which picked up the lobby WIFI, or allow us to move to another hotel. After that they made a thousand false promises to get it fix but the never delivered. At one point the manager came up with a cached Internet site on her cell phone trying to say nothing was wrong...an outright lie. We succumbed to going to the lobby to use the Internet and then that quit working for the last two days of our three day stay. Additionally we verified with the front desk prior to making a local call that we would not be charged, and of course we got the absolutely not from the front desk, but upon checkout we had a charge. The positive things were the location, room cleanliness, good free breakfast, friendliness of staff. The main negative thing is the staff we tell you pleasantly they were going to do something for you, but then they didn't deliver...my guess is because the were not empowered to do so, or they weren't trained properly.
