Polaria

Polaria which includes modern architecture

Designed as an educational center, this aquarium features knowledge-based exhibits, display tanks with local marine life and a panoramic cinema.

Learn about the ecology of the Arctic from a number of educational displays at Polaria. See bearded seals swimming in a large tank and view an exhibit about clams being used by researchers to identify changes in the arctic marine ecosystem. This aquarium has been designed as a resource to educate visitors on the region’s marine life and the effect of climate change on the Arctic.

Get insight into the Arctic food chain and the human influence on the area through a special exhibit combining film, theater and storytelling. This aquarium also features displays on the Svalbard region, a remote ice glacier terrain located about halfway between Norway’s mainland and the North Pole. Discover rare specimens of Arctic marine life and cold-water fish.

The bearded seals are known for their intelligent nature and quiet disposition. They are usually found near the Arctic Ocean and are identified by their bushy whiskers. Watch Polaria’s trainers feed and play with these wonderful aquatic mammals. View the seals from many angles. This experience is especially popular among children.

Watch two short films in the center’s panoramic cinema. This remarkable cinema is about 65 feet (20 meters) wide and seats 175 people. See stunning helicopter images of Svalbard. Watch close-up footage of the ice region’s sparse wildlife, including a small species of bird known as the little auk. The second film focuses on the northern lights over Tromsø, a wonderful natural phenomenon that involves colorful lights and patterns dancing in the sky.

Notice the unusual architecture of the building itself, designed to depict sheets of ice pressed up against land by Arctic seas.

Polaria is open every day of the year. Check the official website for admission fees. The aquarium is a short walk from the center of Tromsø. Stay in nearby hotels and guesthouses in Tromsø’s lively commercial center.

Visiting Polaria is a great opportunity to learn about northern Norway’s unique ecology and rare marine life.
