Travel Guide
Sønderborg
A trip to Sønderborg gives you the opportunity to visit the town’s romantic castle, enjoy unspoilt scenery and go on a Segway tour around the area where the 1864 war raged.

Sønderborg is famous as a historic market town that played a vital role in the history of Denmark. Its location between Als and the Sundelev peninsula has created an exciting town made no less interesting by its historic castle, characteristic church spire and the charming houses leading down to the sound.

Sønderborg was founded towards the end of the 12th century, along with the impressive castle. The town belonged to Germany from 1864 to 1920, leaving behind a fascinating blend of two cultures. Start your visit at Sønderborg Slot, where Christian II was held prisoner between 1532 and 1549. It was known as one of the most robust fortifications in the realm, and has since been home to the royal family and now to Museum Sønderjylland, where you can learn more about the cultural heritage of the area.

A short walk from the castle takes you to the town’s high street Perlegade, featuring fashion, toy and hardware shops. This is also the area where most restaurants and cafés are to be found. Make sure you also take a look at Sankt Marie Kirke, dating from the 16th century.

If you watched Bornedal’s TV drama series “1864”, we recommend continuing on to Dybbøl Mølle and Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke. The much-loved mill has suffered war and destruction several times, the most important of which was the Battle of Dybbøl in 1864, which you can learn more about at the history centre. Move on to trying your hand at a Segway tour to the mill and the surrounding area where the Danish army suffered heavy bombardment.

Sønderborg also features a wide variety of outdoor activities, many of which are centred around Alssundet and the lush beech woodlands of the area. Have a go at fishing for example at Sønderborg Havn or stroll along the Alssundstien. See if you can time your visit to coincide with the historic Ringriderfest, a tribute to the traditional Medieval jousts.

There are regular trains to Sønderborg from Fredericia with direct links to Aalborg, Aarhus and Copenhagen. If coming to Sønderborg from the latter, you can also fly direct to Sønderborg Airport.

A holiday in Sønderborg can mean a Segway tour for the active, historical castles, traditional jousting tournaments and shopping!
