Property Amenities
Of all the hotels in Tangiers, El Minzah is without a doubt the most sumptuous and elegant. El Minzah is one of the few five star establishments in the city and it was built at the command of John Crichton-Stuart. He was the fourth Marquis of Bute, a British aristocrat with extensive interests in the 'International Zone'. The hotel was constructed in a pure Hispano-Moorish style and it is true to the architectural heritage of Morocco whilst embodying all the comfort of an English gentleman's club.
Situated on the Straits of Gibraltar, where Europe and Africa almost touch, the El Minzah was the fashionable heart of 'International Tangiers'. It was then that the hotel first acquired its deserved reputation as one of the most luxurious in North Africa. The passage of time has neither marred the charms of the El Minzah nor witnessed any diminution in its unrivalled position as the leading hotel in northern Morocco.
The views from the El Minzah are stunning. One can survey the Bay of Tangiers, the Straits of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains against which backdrop is set the old medina and Cap Malabata. Nestled in the luxuriant gardens are beds of roses and giant geraniums, lilies, hibiscus and countless exotic plants. The immaculate lawns are shaded by palm, orange and eucalyptus trees.
Location
The hotel was built in a Spanish-Moorish style in 1930 and it is located in the mystical city of Tangiers. El Minzah faces the strait of Gibraltar and is close to the beach, the port, the Tangiers Train Station and is 12 kilometers from the Tangiers Airport.
Rooms
The hotel has recently been enlarged by the addition of a third floor built in the same architectural style as the original building. It boasts 140 elegantly furnished air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms, including 15 suites.
All our rooms include mini-bars, satellite television, hair dryers, and all the facilities one would expect in a luxury hotel.
The vast majority of the bedrooms have a sun facing south-easterly aspect allowing uninterrupted views of the gardens and the renowned Bay of Tangiers.
The bedrooms are situated off elegant, richly carpeted and furnished Hispano-Moorish corridors. In designing and decorating the El Minzah successive owners have ensured that it reflects the magnificence and purity of line of Andalousian good taste in which restraint and richness were considered of equal importance in producing harmonious interiors.
The elegance of El Minzah has attracted clientele such as Kings Juan Carlos of Spain, Michael of Roumania, and Constantine of the Helens among others, Princes, Presidents, Prime Ministers such as Sir Winston Churchill and Hollywood stars such as Rita Heyworth, Sir Rex Harrison, Rock Hudson, Farrah Fawcette Major, Jean-Claude Van Damm, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickfords, Erol Flynn, Anthony Quinn, Gina Lollobrigida and Rex Harrison.

Dining
Adjoining the restaurant « El Korsan » is the equally elegant and famed « El Erz » where International Cuisine is served in a dining room of exquisite architectural harmony.
In a forest of pillars, and arches, supporting a restrained Moroccan beamed ceiling, up to 180 guests may order from Tangiers's most extensive « a la carte » menu. Specialities include « Sole Waleska », « Chateaubriand », and « Poached Turbot ». The terrace of the dining rooms overlooks extensive gardens and commands views of both the medina (old city) of Tangier and the bay. Through palm fond and scarlet hibiscus blooms the coast of Spain, and the towering Rock of Gibraltar may be glimpsed. A restaurant of exceptional elegance and dignity the « El Erz » is the « social heart » of Tangier. Generations of Tangerois and the « jet set » have long claimed it as their « preferred » meeting place in the « White City ». The El Minzah is fortunate in being able to honestly boast that its Chefs are equally at home in producing the finest « International Cuisine » and the most refined examples of Morocco's ancient and deservedly famous national dishes.
Although International or Moroccan dishes may be ordered in either the former, decorated in a purely Moorish style, and seating up to 120 dinners, is the preferred venue for clients wishing to savour the delicate flavours of our famed national cuisine.
Moroccan female Chefs carefully prepare harira, cous cous, tagines or other succulent dishes.
Dinner in the « El Korsan » is accompanied, most nights, by a cabaret of Moroccan dance and music. A talented professional dancer, veiled in transparent green chiffon, weaves her way between performing the age old dances of Arabia.
From Caid's Piano Bar one gains entrance to the garden terrace and swimming pool (built in 1962, it replaced an earlier beach club once owned by the hotel and situated on the corniche). Here, during good weather, guests may lunch at the « Misbah Club » serving themselves from an extensive and delicious buffet, or order from the « a la carte » menu.
Up to seventy clients may dine here at any one time, by the pool, and beneath parasols shading them from the sun. Many linger over aperitifs, or liquors, fine champagnes, and exceptional cognacs and watch the swallows bounce-bathe in the swimming pool.
Just off the Patio, on the right-hand side of the staircase, is the « Wine Bar », an intimate restaurant much favoured by established clientele of the hotel.
Alternatively they may wish to study the many turn of the century and « Internationl Period » photographs of Tangier. In a real sense the walls of the Wine Bar are a mini-museum to Tangiers’s famed past and equally fascinating present.
A dining room of singular charm, discrete and intimate, the « Wine Bar » has the atmosphere of a private dining room in a great Belle Époque hotel. It is unique in Tangier. Another jewel in the El Minzah's crown.
Recreation
An indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a spa tub are on site. Other recreational amenities include a health club, a sauna, and a fitness facility.
The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or nearby; fees may apply.
Spa
Health Club and Spa
Located in the city center, El Minzah Wellness Health Club is certainly the ideal place to eliminate stress. With its 2000 m2, the club provides twenty cabins for individual treatments, an aquatic circuit and a facility for health checks by a permanent physician and physiotherapist. There are also areas for gymnastics, body building and aerobics. After, you can unwind with a sauna, a steam bath or a Turkish bath and then be sure to visit the beauty spa & shop and the dietary restaurant "Venus".

“One of the World's Best”
I have stayed at the Minzah at least a dozen times since 1996. It is one of my favorite hotels in the world; some of the others being the Hotel des Bains on the Lido next to Venice, the Majapajit in Surabaya, Java, Indonesia and the Bali Spirit Hotel in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. The service is special; the swimming pool and wellness center is fabulous, the hallways and reception rooms are unique. Most importantly the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, the water is hot with good water pressure. All the rooms have views of the Mediterranean. I feel special when I stay here.
“23 years visiting: I love this place.”
I love this hotel and have stayed there occasionally for nearly quarter of a century. It has changed little in that time and in most respects that is a good thing. The staff are wonderful and as far as I am concerned could not be more helpful. The graceful, mysterious ambience and staff are the strengths.I have never been in a hotel where the room is kept more scrupulously tidy and clean.Food is pretty decent too and it's a great base for exploring the town. Downsides: soundproofing of some rooms,no kettle in room, mattresses could be softer, spa could be more friendly and I don't think it's a great idea to charge guests extra for a brief swim in the "aquagym" which is the barely swimmable pool.
“A pleasurable experience with very helpful staff”
I saw a lot of negative comments on this hotel, but I was pleasantly surprised. We went for my wife's 40th birthday, and they provided us with a nice room overlooking the sea for no additional cost. They also provided a surprise birthday cake at no cost which was a nice touch. Staff were very helpful and not pushy!. Facilities were not what i expected for a 5*, but a good 4*. Had 2 meals in the hotel, a bit pricey when compared to what you could get outside, but it was of good quality. The breakfast was a bit of a let down, good if you like continental with pastries, crepes, cheese, meats etc, but the hot breakfast left a little to be desired. I may seem overly critical if i am rating it a good 4*, but the positives certainly outweigh the negatives The Wellness centre was also a good add on, with 45 minute massages working out at just under £20 if you are staying at the hotel. Lots of equipmment in the gym too, considering it's a hotel gym. Overall, I would rec
“Luxury in Tangiers”
The El Minzah is an impressive hotel, historically important and very comfortable. Expect old fashioned luxury rather than up to date features. The Hotel restaurant is very upscale, with great service, the food is OK but not up to the prices.
“A quality resort-like hotel right in the middle of Tangier.”
The El Minzah doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside is a beautiful garden with a large swimming pool and full spa facilities. The rooms are comfortable, with a nice Moroccan character, and full services are provided. The food in several restaurants is more than adequate. The hotel's central location makes it a very good choice if one want's to explore histroic Tangier.
“Apart from service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fine”
This is a lovely old hotel. However the reception staff are useless and so s the Hall porter and his staff. This part of the package was not 5 star more like 2 star.
“Not a 4 Star Hotel”
Reception service was very poor and we felt that the staff were discussing us and laughing at us. They had only 1 computer to check people out. Room was shabby - dirty carpet and no armchair to sit in. Bathroom was outdated and shabby, with a broken toilet seat. The restaurants and bar were understaffed and the staff were fighting and shouting at one another! Would rank it as just about a 3 Star Hotel.
