Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge

Whether photographing, walking or driving into the city, don’t miss one of  Brasília’s favorite constructions within a city of architectural brilliance.

The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge is a must-see for architecture buffs or those looking for a great souvenir photo of Brasília. Drive underneath its iconic arches, cycle down its walkways or kayak in the scenic lake below to enjoy the artful majesty of this large construction.

The bridge was finished in 2002 as a connection between the population groups on the southeast side of Lake Paranoá and Brasília’s central districts. The spectacular architectural feat was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and named in honor of the president who made the decision to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília, a more central location.

During your approach to the bridge, enjoy some of its dynamic design features. For one, the bridge is a vital part of the city plan, aligning itself along the Monument Axis toward the city center. While taking advantage of its practical use, take a moment to admire its award-winning visual splendor, which is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Three steel arches zigzag the bridge and resemble a majestic sea serpent encircling its prey.

For a great way to see the construction, try driving down its three-lane thoroughfares. The arches passing overhead combined with the incredible view of Lake Paranoá are worth the trip. Alternatively use the bridge’s spacious walkways for cycling or strolling. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to photograph the bridge with the city skyline as a backdrop.

The adventurous may enjoy a different view of the bridge. Rent an inexpensive kayak along the side of Lake Paranoá and paddle out onto the smooth water for picturesque views. On the lake, the Juscelino Kubitschek arches are never out of sight. From this vantage point you get to enjoy the sun and surrounding parklands.

After appreciating its visual beauty, use the bridge to access southern Brasília, which is home to art galleries, restaurants and interesting suburbs. In the evening, find a bar along the north shore of the lake and enjoy viewing the bridge lit up at night.
