Rambla of Montevideo

Home to wharves, piers and shops, this long avenue meanders its way along the entire southern coastline of Uruguay’s capital city.

The Rambla of Montevideo is a long avenue that stretches along the coastline of Uruguay’s capital city. To differentiate between distinct areas of the highway, specific names are given, such as Rambla Mahatma Gandhi or Rambla Armenia. The avenue is popular with joggers and cyclists due to the scenic views of the Río de la Plata. Visit some of the many wharves, piers, shops and restaurants along its 13.6-mile (21.9-kilometer) length.

Take a relaxing stroll along the avenue and enjoy the view of the vast river. Dine at one of the many restaurants and cafés lining the banks. Jog along the charming avenue as the sun sets.

You can also spend the day with the family at one of the beaches along the avenue. Take a refreshing dip in the water or sunbathe on the warm sand. See the Greetingman statue in the Buceo region. It is a 19.7-foot (6-meter) sculpture by a South Korean artist of a man bowing in a traditional greeting gesture.

Watch local people gathering at the waterfront, particularly in the summer. It is a popular destination for both locals and travelers. The pedestrian area beside the road is made of large squares of red granite. Enjoy the local tradition of “mate,” a hot tea made from a range of herbs. Many people spend an afternoon with a picnic and a drink on the avenue and then stay in the evening for the chatty atmosphere.

Rambla is the Spanish term for “avenue.” Most Uruguayan cities have their own equivalent avenue that passes along the city’s coastline. Visit this area, which is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city and an important part of the Montevideo culture.

The Rambla of Montevideo stretches from the Bay of Montevideo in the west of the city to the Carrasco region in the east. It meanders along the entire coastline of the city, through zones of Ciudad Vieja, Barrio Sur and Parque Rodó. Find many convenient bus stops located along the avenue.
