Fairmount Park

Philadelphia's premier park is bustling with greenery, public art and first-class museums.

Fairmount Park is the name of both Philadelphia's municipal park system as a whole and the first park formed within this system. The original park covers over 1,600 hectares and is divided into East and West sections. The rest of the system is the same size again and contains many parks, both big and small. It offers visitors both the chance to escape the city centre and to soak up some of the culture for which Philadelphia is famed.

Fairmount Park was dedicated to the city's public in 1855 and soon grew extensively. During the World’s Fair in 1876, millions of visitors descended on the park to commemorate the centenary of the Declaration of Independence, which gained this recreational area international repute.

Because Fairmount Park is so large, one of the best ways to get around is by bicycle. These can be rented for a reasonable fee at Boathouse Row. Alternatively, you can go horseback riding or hike in the woods dotted around. Sport enthusiasts can get involved in organised Frisbee and softball games.

A major part of Fairmount Park is its history and culture. Among the grand residences are William Peters' Belmont Mansion, Hatfield House, Randolph House and the Woodford mansion. Some of these date back to the 18th century. Next, visit the huge Philadelphia Museum of Art where the famous “Rocky steps” scene was filmed. The Smith Memorial Playground provides a fantastic area for younger ones to let off steam. Otherwise, enjoy incidental art which peppers the park, including the famous Florentine Lions, erected here in 1887, and Iroquois, a contemporary tangle of red painted metal by Mark di Suvero.

The park's centrepiece is undoubtedly the Schuylkill River, which is best viewed from the Belmont Plateau on the west bank. Other great photo opportunities are the beautiful Bartram's Garden, the oldest botanical garden in the US, and the Japanese House and Garden. Animal lovers will want to get snap-happy at Philadelphia Zoo.

Fairmount Park in situated in central Philadelphia. The entire park system is open every day, and free parking is available at most attractions. Public transport goes to various park entrances throughout the city.
