“Nice quiet place”
Nice place, quiet, friendly staff, spotlessly clean. Rooms are pretty small though. Might be able to find slightly better value in Kyoto, but this place is still pretty good.
“Traditional Tatami mat hotel”
This is a traditional tatami mat floor hotel with tiny rooms and futons on the floor. The people are extremely friendly, the place is immaculate and the water in the tiny bathroom is hot. You sleep on a futon on the floor which was something we tried and didn't care for. We went to a western hotel down the road which was more to our liking. Personal preference. For this type experience, the place was great. For big beds on a bed frame, look around.
“Great location. Easy jump off point”
Great place to stay. Friendly staff. Not that far from main train station. Great jump off point for site seeing. Right on bus line. Tatami room was comfortable. Shared bath no big deal. Very nice to stay here.
“Good for 2 nites max.”
This hotel, actually ryokan, is very clean and friendly and only 7 minutes walk from the station. The toilet and shower are common for all rooms. There is no tv or radio in the room, however there is free wifi with really good speed. You may end up in a room with no window (at least ours was like this). Since, this place is a ryokan you should not expect a bed. We slept on a relatively thin mattress with an awful pillow. However, there was a down comforter so that was used as a pillow. We were there only for the weekend and so it wasn't so bad sleeping o the floor. I wouldn't reccomend it for a longer stay. There is also a bicycle rental place down the street which rents bikes for 500 yen per day, which is actually really cheap. The most fun way to see Kyoto is on a bike!
“Simple lodging - friendly service”
This is a small, friendly guest house featuring traditional (i.e. no bed -- futon on floor) rooms. Will work well for a "traveller" (I'm a former Peace Corps Volunteer), but not likely the best place for a tourist used to Western hotel rooms. Very simple place-- laundry, kitchen, and cheap bike rental available. Can walk there from train station. Room was spartan but had great air conditioning.
“Friendly, clean and welcoming.”
This was our first experience of staying in a Ryokan and coming from a western hotel in tokyo it was a major shock. We were greeted at the front door and ordered to remove our shoes immediately, we were shown the facilities and our rooms and could not help laughing and thinking what have we done. After the initial shock the accommodation proved to be adequate and very clean although a little on the small side. The location is superb for the attractions and having now stayed in other Ryokans this was one of the best.
“very clean, lovely staff, and in a great location”
although a bit overpriced, the location of this hotel was just a few minutes walk from kyoto station, and near to other stations too which made it easy to get to the temples and other tourist attractions. the staff were extremely helpful and kind and the cleanliness of the hotel, especially the bathroom, was excellent. they also have a washing machine, free internet and a kitchen...which was very useful. i would definitely recommend this hotel to others.
“Convenient and comfortable”
I originally hadn't intended to stay at this hotel but a lot of places were booked out. Very clean, tidy and comfortable but not much space. The communal lounge area is very small and forms part of the reception area. Some DVDs would be handy as there's not much to watch on TV. Other guests and the owner sleep on the sofas some nights as well. We had the downstairs room with bathroom - I've seen aeroplanes with larger bathrooms and although it is convenient having your own bathroom this room is next to the kitchen, lounge and reception so can get a bit noisy if other guests are not considerate. The use of kitchen and washing machine was handy and the hotel is quite close to the subway. Owner speaks very little English but we got by.
“I wish I could speak Japanese!”
Reception left a lot to be desired. I tried ringing the hotel the day before and no-one could understand English, just said "Fax", which I couldn't do. In the end I had to get a Japanese person to confirm that we were expected (we were, thanks, Expedia). Also not the usual Japanese friendly welcome. Very, very small guest lounge. Many positives, clean, very well located, hired bicycles to us without a fuss.
“Cheap, clean.”
Japanese rooms have little comfort, but if you're aware of that on booking, this is an excellent choice. We slept better on these matrasses on the floor then on most western-style beds in other cheap hotels. We did have to get used to the smell in the room though: it smelled a bit funny, because our room didn't have a window. But that's no reason not to book this hotel, I will certainly book the same hotel again when I go back to Kyoto. Very friendly and helpfull hostess, clean rooms, good location near the JR station.
