“Good hotel for non-Japanese speakers”
The hotel was really a nice place to stay. It's a clean, comfortable option close to most things in central Kyoto. The staff was courteous and spoke decent english. In addition, the concierge was good at helping plan how to get to/from local attractions and always had dinner suggestions.
“great hotel in Kyoto”
Hotel Monterey was sleek, clean, well-furnished room very comfortable beds, very modern bathroom, very quiet, extremely attentive staff, well located near subway station, walked almost everywhere to sights. Highly recommend stay here.
“Do yourself a favor and stay here”
I cannot even begin to explain how phenomenal my stay was at the Hotel Monterey Kyoto. I booked the hotel online because I read a couple of very positive reviews and the location and price met my criteria. To my surprise, Hotel Monterey proved to be much more than I ever hoped. (I stayed 2 extra nights!) First of all, the hotel is brand new and the architecture is amazing and functional. The rooms are not large, but they are elegant, stylish, and fully equipped with gadgets and a useful amenities (such as free internet in the room). Second, the staff are absolutely the best I encountered in my entire trip to Japan. They speak fluent English (which is a rarity) and they went out of their way to help me feel comfortable at the hotel and in Kyoto. Third, the concierge provided me with a wealth of information about Kyoto that really helped me to choose the best attractions to visit. I sincerely believe that the recommendations (and maps and info in general) that I got from the concierge at this hotel (including where to rent a bike) made my Kyoto experience unforgettable. Fourth, the hotel is located in the BEST area of Kyoto. Look no further: you're a block away from the metro and main bus stops (5 mins to Kyoto Station), but you're also walking distance from Gion and the entertainment district. Major temples and attractions are all located within reach by foot or short bike ride. Do yourself a favor and stay at this amazing hotel!
“Great hotel for a great price!”
My wife and I were very impressed by the Hotel Monterey Kyoto. The price was as low as a bare bones business hotel, but the experience was of a much nicer hotel. The room was not large, but this is in Japan so it is to be expected. The location is great, convenient to multiple subway lines, bus stations, and the Nishiki and Shoji shopping areas. We'll be looking for Hotel Montereys whenever we travel to Japan from now on.
“Wonderful location.d”
The hotel was clean and very helpful upon check in. also, the concierge was helpful in planning my day. can buy bus tickets at this hotel... which is a great way to see the city. 2 Starbucks in block of hotel and a nearby restaurant with computers and Internet for purchase of cup of tea.
“very comfortable hotel”
We stayed in the hotel for 4 days and were very impressed. Rooms are little bit smaller (but that you should expect in Japan), it was very clean, and they provided every day clean pyjamas! We also liked the central location of this hotel. It is an easy walk to the Imperial Park, Nijo castle, and Nishiki market. The breakfast buffet was a little bit pricey (~ 22$), but they had a huge variety of european and Japanese cuisine. We would stay there again.
“Treated like royalty! The room was great!”
At the time we went in March 2010, Hotel Monterey Kyoto had a WONDERFUL price through Expedia. Our twin room (2 twin beds) was very spacious like a western hotel. If you get a queen or a double bed, those rooms are smaller. We put the infant travel bed in the corner and had ample room to move around. The royal red colors amazed us as we walked in the room! The bathroom was also fairly spacious. The toilet seat and the mirror are both heated. When you get out of the shower, there's a little clear rectangle so you can still see the mirror in the midst of a steamy room. I love these little perks about Japan! Our lovely bellhop also brought a plug adaptor for our laptop to our room door. We loved the free LAN internet access! She also brought a towel to our door, too. It was hard not to tip, but that is not the custom in Japan.
“Great place to stay.”
We found the hotel to be very convieniently located near the rail station. The only issue was that the subway didnot have any escalators so having to lug up suitcases was a major effort. The hotel staff were very helpful and spoke english. The only criticism I would have was the lack of televison viewing. There was only one english speaking channel BBC world news but that got very repetitive. The was pay on demand movies but the titles were all in japanese and there was no english translation. The room was very clean and comfortable. There was a mini bar which you could also store your own drinks etc which was very handy. All in all we enjoyed our stay at the hotel and would definately return.
“Highly Recommended Hotel”
This was an Expedia special and I got the room for half price. I don't usually stay in fancy hotels but this place was amazing. Super friendly staff, the room was great with nice touches like a traditional tea pot and instructions on how to brew Japanese tea. There's also a nice little sitting space right next to the window (in the room) that's great for watching people watching down below. Fantastic hotel that would be worth it even if it was full price.
“Kyoto Trip August 2011”
For the great price, this was an excellent place to stay for a few days. The hotel is very modern, the room was nice and the services were as you'd expect. It was quite close to the main shopping streets, the subway, and within walking distance of places like Gion, Kabukiza, Manga Museum, etc. I'd definitely pick this place again as an easy hotel to stay in.
