Recently opened, Pattaya’s latest attraction is officially known as the Four Regions Floating Market and is separated into 4 different sections, each representing and selling items native to the four regions of Thailand: Northern, Southern, Central and North-eastern. Uncover the richness of the surrounding Thai architecture and soak up the charming riverside atmosphere as you drift by.
With over 100 thatched stalls perched on stilts over the water, Pattaya’s floating market is one of the biggest man-made, water-based markets in Thailand, covering an area of 11 hectares. Savour the local fare from sizzling pad thai (stir-fried rice noodles) to delectable kanom krok (coconut pancakes) and shop ‘til you drop for souvenirs and Thai handicrafts such as wooden carvings and fine silks.
These Thai-style teak wood stalls are all linked by a network of canals and footbridges, making it easy for you to visit the different regions by foot. For the full floating market experience, rent a boat taxi, usually big enough for 4 people, to ferry you from dock to dock, and admire the stalls at your own pace while your driver waits patiently for you on the water.
In addition to shopping and eating, there are also plenty of other activities to keep you occupied. There are several cultural performances showcased daily that are certainly worth a visit. Delight in some classical Thai dancing with the performers clad in traditional Thai finery, or cheer on your favourite in a local water-boxing match. Catch a glimpse of ancient Thai craftsmanship at its best in the wood-carving museum and marvel at some the country’s most beautiful hand-carved works. Budding photographers should head straight for the sunflower field and take advantage of the spectacular scenery.
Located on Sukhumwit Road, just south of Pattaya, the Floating Market is easily accessible with buses running from all main beaches several times a day. The market is open every day, however it can become very crowded at weekends. You will also be charged a small fee upon arrival.
