“Rutland arms”
Fab Oldie worldie hotel right in the heart of Newmarket complete with beams and crooked floors :) Ideal for racing 20min walk to Rowley Mile or about £5 in taxi.
“BAGS OF CHARACTER”
The Rutlands Arms in Newmarket, Suffolk, is a Georgian hotel in the main but was certainly at one time a coaching inn. Some of the floors retain the timber framework of the original and it is, therefore, a hotel with bags of character. I've eaten there before and found the food excellent, as was the breakfast when I stayed. The hotel's service was faultless and above all very friendly and helpfull indeed. I will stay there again and recommend it to others unhesitatingly.
“A lovely weekend at the races!”
We had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel. It's a 15 or so minute walk to the races so we felt it was a great location! The rooms are nice, hotel staff are very friendly and if anything, we had a nice suprise when we checked in as we weren't expecting it to be asxnice as it was!
“Very impressed with both Newmarket and the hotel”
Very good hotel, right in the centre of the town. Very pleasant courtyard for a drink.
“Lovely character hotel with brilliant staff”
My wife and I stayed here for Christmas 2010 to be near my family, as this is my home town. The Rutland Arms was one of the few establishments open at Christmas and offered us the best deal, so we gave it a try. It turned out really well! The hotel has been there a long time and has lots of character- to say nothing of its links with Charles 2nd and Nell Gwynne, whose cottage is next door. It has been modernised, but you could tell this was a little while ago and it could probably do with a freshen-up. Our room was at the back of the building and was spacious, cosy and comfortable. It was very quiet and came with a bathroom, complete with bath & shower fitting. The water was always hot, with fresh towels every day and there was the usual tea & coffee facilities, plus a full Freeview menu on the flat-screen TV. Breakfast consisted of a fair range of cereals, fruit and juices, followed by a full breakfast cooked to order, (including kippers for those that like them) and fresh toast and drinks. Couldn't really fault it. All the we met staff couldn't do more to be friendly and welcoming and responded positively to any request. If you're lucky you may get one of the few car parking spaces on the road at the front, but you're more likely to need the hotel car park, which is across Palace Street at the back and is operated by tokens from the reception. Worked fine for us. All told, a very enjoyable experience. Hope we can go there again sometime.
“Lovely Hotel”
A labyrinth of corridors! Don't miss your room!! I recommend the restaurant in this hotel. It serves good food!!
“Ok as a B&B”
This hotel had a bit of a down at heel feel to it, The room was small, the bed small with with holes in the covers, the furniture chipped , tired and the walls long overdue for a coat of paint. The staff were friendly and helpful which made up for the rather tired facilities and the breakfast was OK.We felt that it was an efficient bed and breakfast establishment though we would have felt cheated if we had paid the full advertised hotel rates .
