“Great place to stay and an excellent dining room - great food and good value for money”
Great place to stay with lots of atmosphere, very comfortable room with a brand new bathroom, though the place dates back 500 years or so.
“Nice Hotel”
Nice Hotel with a good location. Big rooms and showers.
“Red Lion”
Lovely old hotel, full of character. Staff were very friendly and breakfast was fabulous.
“A piece of the past.”
This is a very quaintly decorated historic hotel located centrally in this medieval city. The elevator is covered floor and walls with carpeting, and has a regular door in front of the elevator door, very different. The decor is colourful, with antiques placed here and there. There is a lovely outdoor area for food/drinks in nice weather. The parking, however, is a nightmare. You have to use city P parking, can only buy for 3 hours maximum. Will get ticketed if not up to the minute on your payment. It is free, however, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. But at 8:01 a.m. you better be out there putting more money in the meter. We chose to stay in this city, and therefore this hotel, as it is so close to Stonehenge.
“No ghosts”
This ancient hotel, in the centre of my home city of Salisbury, is not quite as old as Stonehenge, but just as fascinating & a lot less draughty! In fact, it wears its 700-odd years very gracefully, & we loved it, having never actually stayed there before. The coaching inn archway leads into a cobbled courtyard festooned with Virginia creeper. Bar & lounge are cosy, dining room elegant but a bit dark. However, we took breakfast (the works, including smoked salmon with scrambled egg: my favourite) in the pretty conservatory. The hotel is full of heavy black oak carved chests, pictures & other interesting antiques. We stayed over Remembrance weekend, & requested a quiet room but were given a suite with small sitting room (with TV) as well as good bathroom (with fluffy towel dressing-gowns) & large bedroom with another TV & tea/coffee & kettle. Prices were lower than less desirable hotels locally. Disadvantages: there's a nightclub next door, noisy on Friday and Saturday but barely audible from our room. Car parking is limited to 6 'Disabled' cars, but there's a £4 per night public car park next door. Few of the staff are locals. Lots of stairs. No ghosts.
“The Red Lion - can't fault it”
If you're expecting a Holiday Inn type experience, this isn't the place for you. However, if you like to stay in a place with a lot of character, original features and history, then I would recommend the Red Lion. The only thing I would say is that on a Saturday morning at the back of the hotel, it is noisy very early. When we saw earplugs in the room upon arrival, it did concern me, but I should have taken notice and worn them to avoid being woken by delivery men at about 6.15am. That was the only downside though. The room was quirky but clean and comfortable, the bathroom was clean, the breakfast was good, staff were polite and friendly. The hotel is ideally located in the centre of Salisbury. No parking but the NCP is 2 minutes walk away with no shortage of spaces. All in all, I would highly recommend it.
“No parking despite expedia report! Expensive breakfasts”
Having rejected three other hotels because of the lack of parking, we saw that expedia reported lots of free parking here - on arrival, there was only metered/carpark nearby. This said ,staff sympathetic and did try to fix this...but others be warned. Breakfast charge of £12 per head (Nov 2011) is ridiculously expensive. Good coffee shops nearby. Good central site for tourism/shopping. Helpful staff - fixing TV etc
“Mixed”
The staff at Reception took some time to greet and check myself and my partner in - they were rather preoccupied chatting There was some confusion about car parking arrangements - eventually we were given a pass to an associate hotel's car park - the alternative was to use the local pay and display. The room we were assigned (82) overlooked the nearby main road, and was accessed by a circuitous route involving a rather ancient (and very slow) lift. The room was of a good size, but was a little "tired" - a bit shabby, but clean. We discovered during the night that the nearby street has clubs that play loud music until the early hours.... *sigh* Next day we asked to be moved to another room. The new room (52) was very much better - recently refurbished to a high standard, spacious and well equipped. Worth the money (unlike the previous room!). We had room service the first night, which was good - although there was some confusion about accompanying side orders. On the second night we ate in the restaurant - a good menu and very good food. All in all a pleasant stay - although the older rooms need refurbishment.
