“Perfect for Bordeaux Vineyard Vacation”
The only downside to this beautiful small chateau is the encroaching power lines and industry of the city of Bordeaux in the far distance. Located in the countryside at the base of some of the best vineyards in France this is the ideal place to stay for a wine vacation. The chateau is beautifully appointed with both modern elegance and old world charm with large and lovely rooms and bathrooms. The vineyards are just a short drive down winding country roads through small villages, and unlike Napa were very intimate and not commercialized and crowded. I strongly recommend that reservations for tastings and tours are made in advance online or through your hotel, and that you remember that the hours for visitation are short and usually not on Sunday but one or two.

We used Grattequina as a base for a long weekend stay for touring the Bordeaux region including the Medoc-St Emilion vineyards and wineries. If you stay at Grattequina be sure to speak with the owner-innkeeper who will share pictures and story of the renovation personally done by him in 2004. Fascinating! Prior to arrival, email contacts confirmed our arrival time and a response to our request for suggested vineyard visits. Their assistance was gracious and flawless in making arrangements. Truly a Four Star experience at reasonable rates. The place is so clean and tidy that you feel you are in someone's home as a guest and want to treat it accordingly. Even though there is a very modern up to date elevator as is the case for other amenities, do not miss the extravagant ascent by the center staircase to your room. With a rental car, we avoided hassles of a downtown stay and Bordeaux's industrial past. Since we had a very early flight departure, it was only about 15-20 minutes from Grattequina's front gate (the entry roadway is about 1/2 mile) to airline check-in including car-drop. In total- memorable gentle experience.
“Great Bordeaux Hotel”
Really nice converted country house/ small chateau hotel 15 minutes drive just north of Bordeaux,about 5 mins from ringroad, right on the river. Room was beautiful old french style, enormous - even though we had their most basic room. Inside hotel was a mix of modern and restored original features. Nice small pool. Very good service from staff. At all times it felt like we had the whole house to ourselves despite another 6 couples staying there. Grattiquina is on the way to Paulliac/Margaux wine area on the slow road. Unfortunately they don't do evening meals there. We would probably have stayed for longer had we not pre-arranged the rest of our holiday in another wine region. We would happily stay there again and recommend to others looking for a country hotel, not far from all the great restaurants Bordeaux has to offer, and on the wine routes, and beach resorts of Landes.
