“Queluz palace”
This traditional cozy hotel is a part of a former royal residence, which is located in Queluz, suburb of Lisbon. It is easy to approach to both Lisbon and Sintra by frequent train services. You can enjoy very warm welcome and Portuguese breakfast with coffee and "pastel de nata"(Portugal's sweet pastry), or English breakfast (if you like, of course). This is one of the Portuguese "pousada" accomodations, luxury hotels converted from national historic buildings.
“A very special getaway in a particular location. A slice of Portuguese history”
I want to go out of my way to say this is a great place. It is especially good if 1) you like historical locales; 2) you value attentive, friendly service; 3) you appreciate value for money; 4) you like the idea of getting away from it all and spending your days eating and visiting Portugal's response to Versailles; 5) you have a car and want to be between Lisbon and Sintra; 6) you don't mind taking a moderately priced taxi to and from Lisbon. This is the closest Pousada to Lisbon and I chose it for a member of my party who needed to get away, relax and have a pleasant hotel staff looking after her. With that goal in mind, I owe a great debt to the Pousada de Queluz. It was really charming and everyone in the place made all of us feel like they really cared about our well being. They definitely earned my five stars. Note, however, this place probably has limited appeal for kids. There aren't a lot of amenities that seemed obviously designed with them in mind.
“convenient to airport, Queluz, and Sintra”
20 euro taxi ride from the airport. We arrived after an overnight flight, so we had a couple of hours to spend before we could get into our room. This was no problem because we were able to stow our luggage and then walk directly across the street to the palace. There we could wander through the palace buildings and gardens and rest at a small cafe until the room was ready. The room itself was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Unfortunately we did not have a chance to try the restaurant as we were on a busy schedule. The hotel is a ten-minute walk to the train station, where we were able to buy tickets to Sintra. This was only a 20-25 minute ride and the train service was quite regular so it was very convenient to get there and back. We were able to buy a 24-hr card there and use it to take the train again in the morning to get to downtown Lisbon. Overall we were very pleased with the service, quality, and location of this hotel. I have never visited another pousada so I can't provide any comparison however.
“Not impressed”
The building (in the palace grounds) was poorly maintained externally with peeling paintwork on walls and window frames. The girls in reception were extremely helpful. The lighting in the rooms was via table lamps and therefore was subdued giving a somewhat dingy appearance. The breakfast room was small and cramped but the food was varied and exellent.The bathrooms were as you would expect with a modern 5 star hotel. Access to the restaurant for evening meals was external to the hotel via a hundred metres of uneven cobbled paving, luckily it didn't rain while we were there (no protection from the elements) although my wife did have difficulty with her high heels on the cobbles. The food in the restaurant was of a good standard and not too expensive. The restaurant internal decor was attractively restored from an original kitchen with an enormous marble table and feature chimney. This is a small (24 rooms)and somewhat isolated hotel and lacks most of the facilities you would expect in a modern 5 star hotel ie. no pool, fitness centre, sauna etc.
