Overview

  • Explore the sacred Kumano region and Wakayama's Pacific coast on a private 2-day road trip from Osaka. Avoid complicated train connections as you visit forested pilgrimage paths, grand shrines, Nachi Falls and coastal viewpoints at your own pace.

Day 1: Osaka city hotel → Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Shingu → a short Daimonzaka section of the Kumano Kodo → Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seigantoji and Nachi Falls → your independently booked hotel in Kii-Katsuura.

Day 2: Kii-Katsuura hotel → Kushimoto's Hashiguiiwa Rocks → Shirahama's beach and coastal viewpoints → Osaka city hotel.

Vehicle service is up to 10 hours per day, with an overnight break. Guest accommodation, meals and admissions are extra. The 6- and 9-guest options include an English-speaking driver-guide for basic assistance, not a licensed guide or an escorted hike; larger options are driver-only.

Contact us 24 hours ahead for changes. Steep steps, traffic, weather and parking may require shorter visits or a revised route.

Activity itinerary

Day 1: Journey into Wakayama’s Spiritual Heart – Kumano Kodo & Kumano Grand Shrines

  • 4 stops
  • Meals: Not included
  • Accommodation: Not included

Kumano Hayatama Taisha

  • 40m
Begin your journey with a scenic drive from Osaka into the mountainous and coastal landscapes of the Kii Peninsula. Arrive at Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Shingu, one of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano and an important spiritual site associated with Japan's ancient pilgrimage traditions. Explore the peaceful shrine grounds, admire the distinctive vermilion buildings, and discover the sacred atmosphere surrounding this historic place. Take time to appreciate the traditional Shinto architecture, the ancient sacred tree, and the forested surroundings. The shrine offers an introduction to the religious heritage that has drawn pilgrims to the Kumano region for centuries. General access to the shrine grounds is free. The optional treasure museum is not included. Any paid exhibits or special religious activities are at guests' own expense.

Daimonzaka

  • 45m
Experience a short section of the historic Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route at Daimonzaka, one of the area's most atmospheric walking paths. Follow an ancient stone-paved trail surrounded by towering cedar trees and lush forest. Discover the distinctive landscape that has welcomed pilgrims for generations, with moss-covered stones, traditional pathways, and impressive old trees. Enjoy opportunities for photography and a peaceful walk through the forested surroundings. This visit is designed as a short introduction to the Kumano Kodo rather than a full pilgrimage hike. The complete Daimonzaka trail includes approximately 267 stone steps, with additional stairs leading towards Kumano Nachi Taisha. Guests may choose a shorter accessible section according to their walking ability, weather, and available time. The path can become slippery in wet conditions. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are strongly recommended.

Kumano Nachi Taisha

  • 1h 10m
Continue to the sacred mountain area of Nachisan, home to Kumano Nachi Taisha and Seigantoji Temple. Visit Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano, and admire its traditional Shinto buildings overlooking the surrounding mountains. Discover the spiritual significance of the area and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this important pilgrimage destination. Nearby, explore Seigantoji Temple, a historic Buddhist temple closely associated with the sacred Nachi landscape. The combination of Shinto and Buddhist sites provides an opportunity to experience the distinctive religious traditions of the Kumano region. Enjoy views towards the forested mountains and the famous waterfall. The optional three-story pagoda offers an additional sightseeing opportunity, subject to operating hours and separate admission. The route includes stone steps, slopes, and uneven surfaces. Guests with reduced mobility may need to shorten their visit.

Nachi Mitaki Falls

  • 40m
Discover Nachi Falls, one of Japan's most iconic waterfalls and a celebrated natural landmark of the Kumano region. With a drop of approximately 133 metres, the waterfall creates a dramatic scene against the surrounding forested mountains. Enjoy time for photography and appreciate the connection between this natural landscape and the spiritual traditions of Kumano. Visit the nearby Hirou Shrine area, where the waterfall itself has long been regarded as sacred. Guests may choose to enter the optional paid viewing platform for a closer perspective of the waterfall. Admission to the optional platform is not included. Access may be affected by heavy rain, trail conditions, temporary closures, or local safety restrictions.

Day 2: Discover Southern Wakayama’s Ocean Landscapes – Shirahama & Kushimoto Coast

  • 3 stops
  • Meals: Not included
  • Accommodation: Not included

Hashiguiiwa Rocks

  • 40m
Begin your second day with a coastal drive towards Kushimoto, a scenic destination at the southern end of the Kii Peninsula. Visit Hashiguiiwa Rocks, an impressive natural formation consisting of unusual rock pillars stretching across the shoreline. Admire the dramatic arrangement of rocks rising from the sea and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding coastline. Take photographs from designated viewing areas and learn about the legends associated with this distinctive landscape. The coastline provides beautiful views across the Pacific Ocean and is particularly attractive in clear weather. General access to the public viewpoints is free. Strong winds, high waves, or other unsafe conditions may restrict access to exposed coastal areas.

Shirarahama Beach

  • 45m
Continue to Shirahama, a popular coastal resort town known for its white beaches and beautiful ocean scenery. Visit Shirarahama Beach, where bright white sand meets the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy time for a relaxing beach walk, sightseeing, and photography. The beach offers a refreshing contrast to the sacred forests and historic shrines explored on the previous day. Take in the seaside atmosphere and appreciate the coastal scenery before continuing the journey towards Osaka. The standard stop is intended for sightseeing and photography. Swimming, water sports, beach equipment, and other activities are not included. Weather, seasonal restrictions, and sea conditions may affect access to particular parts of the beach.

Senjojiki

  • 30m
If sufficient time remains, visit Senjojiki, a spectacular coastal rock formation shaped by waves and erosion. Admire the broad, layered rock surfaces stretching towards the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy views of the rugged coastline and take photographs of this distinctive natural landscape. The exposed rock surfaces can be slippery, particularly during rain or strong sea spray. Guests should remain within safe public access areas and avoid approaching dangerous cliff edges. This stop is subject to the remaining driving time and may be shortened or omitted to ensure a reasonable return to Osaka.
