Gili Trawangan, often referred to simply as Gili T, is renowned for its easy access to some of the best snorkelling spots in the region. The island itself is small, approximately 3 km long and 2 km wide, and is surrounded by a coral reef that offers excellent snorkelling opportunities right off its beaches. The clear, warm waters provide perfect visibility, often exceeding 20 metres, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced snorkellers.
One of the most popular snorkelling areas is around Turtle Point, located on the northeastern part of the island. As its name suggests, Turtle Point is famous for its resident sea turtles. Snorkellers here are almost guaranteed to encounter these gentle creatures grazing on sea grass or gracefully swimming by. Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are the most common species found here. The presence of these majestic animals makes snorkelling at Turtle Point a memorable experience, providing close-up encounters that are both thrilling and serene.
Another notable spot is the Bounty Wreck, a sunken platform from an old pier that has become an artificial reef teeming with marine life. This site is a bit deeper than other snorkelling spots, with the wreck lying around 10 metres below the surface, but the water's clarity allows snorkellers to clearly see the vibrant corals and schools of fish that have made this structure their home. It's a fascinating spot where history and nature converge, offering a glimpse into the adaptability and resilience of marine ecosystems.
The west coast of Gili Trawangan also offers exceptional snorkelling experiences. Here, the currents are a bit stronger, which brings in a different array of marine life. Snorkellers can expect to see colourful parrotfish, angelfish, and sometimes even reef sharks. This side of the island provides a more adventurous snorkelling experience, with the added excitement of stronger currents and the potential for larger marine species.
