Overview
Step into the heart of Kyoto’s traditions in one unforgettable experience.
This hands-on cultural programme combines four iconic elements of Japanese heritage — samurai martial arts, calligraphy, kimono, and matcha — all guided by friendly local students near the serene Ryoanji Temple area.
The session takes place in a cosy rental space along the Ryoanji shopping street, offering an intimate and relaxed atmosphere where you can connect with Kyoto’s culture and people in a truly authentic way.
No need for any prior experience — this activity is designed for beginners and travellers who simply want to feel the spirit of Japan in a friendly and welcoming setting.
Kimono : Everyone can enjoy trying on a traditional kimono during the session — it’s a great chance for photos and to feel the spirit of Japan.
For female guests, the kimono you wear is included in the activity fee and can be taken home as a special souvenir.
Martial Arts (Samurai Experience) : You’ll learn the basic stances and movements used in traditional swordsmanship and get a chance to handle a real (safely dulled) Japanese sword.
It’s a rare opportunity to feel the samurai spirit in a fun, safe, and educational environment. You can take dynamic photos while striking samurai poses — perfect memories to share after your trip!
️ Calligraphy (Shodo) : Next, explore the elegance of Japanese calligraphy, known as shodo. Using authentic brushes, ink, and washi paper, you’ll learn how to write your name or a meaningful Japanese word under the guidance of experienced students who have practised since childhood.
Don’t worry about perfection — the focus is on expressing yourself freely and appreciating the beauty of brushwork.
At the end, you’ll take home your finished piece as a unique souvenir that captures your personal touch and memory of Kyoto.
Matcha & Wagashi (Tea and Sweets) : Finally, relax and unwind with a cup of freshly prepared matcha and a traditional wagashi (Japanese sweet).
Our staff will prepare the tea for you — so you can simply enjoy the taste and atmosphere without needing to perform the tea-making yourself.
Photos & Souvenirs : Throughout the session, you’re welcome to take as many photos as you like — we’ll even help you capture the best angles!
You’ll leave not only with your calligraphy work and (for female guests) your kimono, but also with countless memories and stories to take back home.
Local Connection : One of the most unique aspects of this programme is that it’s organised by local university students who have been immersed in their respective arts for many years. Each member specialises in a different field — from martial arts to calligraphy to cultural hospitality — and they’re eager to share their passions in an easygoing, friendly way.
