Explore Taroko National Park, home to many waterfalls, cliffs, and gorges, before heading to Sun Moon Lake for a boat ride. Take in beautiful views during long drives, try delicious cuisine, and venture to the mountain area of Alishan—known for its Oolong tea, amazing sunsets, and forests.

Day 1:
Pass Qingshui Cliff on the coastal Suhua Highway, more than 3,280 feet (1,000 metre) above the Pacific, on the drive to Taroko National Park. As you explore Taroko Gorge, a world-class natural wonder with towering mountains, canyons, and streams, admire the Eternal Spring Shrine and the Swallow Grotto. Then hike the Baiyang Trail to the Baiyang Waterfall and trek through the Water Curtain Tunnel.

Day 2:
Cross the Central Mountain Range on the Central Cross-Island Highway, pass the Bilu Sacred Tree, a Formosan Chinese fir more than 3,200 years old, and drive to the highest point of Taiwan’s highways—Wuling, at 10,645 feet (3,275 metre). Then at Sun Moon Lake, try traditional indigenous cuisine at Ita Thao Village.

Day 3:
Welcome the morning at Sun Moon Lake and take in splendid views from Wenwu Temple. During a day at the lake, ride a boat from Ita Thao Wharf to Xuanguang Temple, go cycling on one of the world’s best bike routes, and snap a few photos.

Day 4:
On your way to Alishan National Scenic Area, one Taiwan’s best mountain areas, stop at the town of Jiji to explore Checheng Old Street and enjoy a premium traditional boxed lunch at Fenqihu just as local lumberjacks did in the past.

Day 5:
Early in the morning, take the Alishan Mountain Railway to Zhushan Station and witness one of the area’s famous sunrises at an exclusive spot away from the crowds. Then go for a walk in the Alishan Forest Recreation Area and admire thousand-year-old cypress trees before driving back to Taipei.
