The journey to Gaumukh Tapovan begins in Dehradun, where you can reach by flight, bus, or train. From Dehradun, your route leads to Gangotri, passing through notable landmarks like Landour, Moriana Top, Uttarkashi, and Harsil. In Uttarkashi, it's advisable to take some time to purchase any necessary items. It's the last town with multiple ATM services, so withdrawing cash here is recommended. Beyond Uttarkashi, we'll pass through Khedi Waterfall at Maneri, Jhala, Harsil, Dharali, and Bhaironghati. Gangotri is a spiritual town offering insights into the local Hindu religion at the Ganga Maiya Temple. Additionally, there are plenty of shops, restaurants, and hotels, ensuring a fulfilling stay.

Upon reaching Gangotri, you'll find yourself already at an elevation of 3,415 metres above sea level. Adjusting to such high altitudes can be challenging due to the decreased oxygen levels and air pressure, potentially leading to altitude-related illnesses like AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). To mitigate the risks of altitude sickness, we'll spend the second day acclimatising in Gangotri. Our day will commence with a visit to the Ganga Maiya Temple, where we'll delve into its ancient cultural significance, evident in its architecture and sculptures. We'll also explore nearby attractions such as Surya Kunda, Pandava Gufa, and Ganga Ghats. Most importantly, we'll prioritise rest to conserve energy for the rest of the trek. Ample sleep, a nutritious diet, and staying hydrated are crucial for effective acclimatisation.
Day 3: Gangotri to Bhojbasa
  • 1 stop
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, snacks
  • Accommodation: Night Camp at Bhojbasa
Bhojbasa
  • 6h
Today, our journey begins with an early start after breakfast. After covering a few kilometres, we'll reach the forest checkpoint. Continuing from the checkpoint, we'll trek approximately 7 kilometres to reach Chirbasa. The trail meanders through a conifer forest, providing glimpses of diverse flora and fauna. Before reaching Chirbasa, we'll encounter a rock with trickling water, known for its mineral-rich quality. Trekkers can refill their water bottles here. As we progress, the valley unfolds, revealing the majestic peaks of Bhagirathi. Along the way, we'll share the path with pilgrims, fellow trekkers, porters, and mules. Our hike leads us to Bhojbasa, named after the Bhojpatra leaves used in ancient times for writing documents and religious texts.
Day 4: Bhojbasa to Tapovan

  • Accommodation: Night Camp at Tapovan
Tapovan
  • 6h
On the fourth day of our trek, we'll trek towards Tapovan from Bhojbasa, covering a distance of approximately 8 kilometres. Before reaching our destination, we'll need to cross the Bhagirathi River via a trolley, which may take 1-2 hours for the entire group. As we journey, the landscape transitions from lush pasturelands, where Blue Sheep herds graze, to barren and rocky terrain. It's essential to have lunch along the way to maintain energy levels, as water sources may be scarce. Carrying at least 2 litres of water is advisable. During the trek, we'll encounter Akash Ganga flowing from Tapovan, merging with the Bhagirathi at Gaumukh. Tapovan offers breathtaking views of Gangotri Glacier, Bhagirathi Peaks, and Aakash Ganga, as well as Mount Shivling and Meru Peak. Tapovan is renowned for astrophotography and stargazing, offering a clear view of the Milky Way galaxy at night. Remember to dress warmly and wear gloves to ward off the chill.

After about an hour of descent, we'll arrive at Gaumukh, the source of the Gangotri glacier. Here, we'll spend an hour or two soaking in the serene atmosphere alongside fellow trekkers and pilgrims before retracing our steps towards Bhojbasa. The remainder of the day will be spent trekking downhill for a few more hours until we reach Bhojbasa, our destination for today.
