What you can expect
Day 1: Arrival to Wonchi area, farming immersion, cultural rituals
Depart early from Addis Ababa and drive to the Wonchi area. Meet your local guide and farmer host, and enjoy a cup of tea. Get an overview of the two-day programme and learn about cultural norms.
Visit a local highland farm and join farmers in seasonal activities like planting, weeding, or harvesting. Get hands-on experience with seed sowing, using local tools, terrace maintenance, or coffee and vegetable tasks. Learn about local cropping systems, soil, and water management on highland slopes.
Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch with a host family, savouring traditional dishes like injera with wot, tibs, shiro, or local vegetable stews. Engage in a conversation about household food security and farm labour organisation.
In the afternoon, visit a local livestock operation to observe sheep, goat, or cattle management, fodder production, and milk use.
Participate in or observe a local ritual practice, such as a blessing or thanksgiving ritual related to harvest, livestock, or ancestral reverence. Your guide will explain the ritual’s meaning, symbols, and proper behaviour.
Take a guided walk through nearby terraced fields and small-holder plots. Discuss indigenous knowledge, seed saving, weather forecasting, pest control, and community labour sharing.
Return to your guesthouse or local homestay. Enjoy an evening coffee ceremony with the family, a rich cultural experience that often includes roasting, grinding, and brewing coffee in front of guests. Spend the night in a simple lodge or homestay near Wonchi.
Day 2: Wonchi Crater Lake recreation, spiritual sites, and local crafts
Have an early breakfast and depart for the crater rim viewpoint. Take a short drive to the rim and enjoy spectacular sunrise views over the crater lake, weather permitting.
Hike down to Wonchi Crater Lake, a 1.5–2 hour descent to the lakeshore. The trail winds through farmland, forests, and small hamlets. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a rain jacket in the wet season.
Take a boat ride across the crater lake to the island monastery, if open and accessible. Visit the 13th-century church on the island and any small hermit dwellings. Observe religious practices if a service or priest is present, and follow etiquette.
Hike back up the crater rim, allowing 2 hours for the steeper climb. Option to ride mules or horse transport if arranged (confirm animal welfare and safety beforehand).
Visit a ritual or sacred tree/site near the crater used for community ceremonies, with permission. Learn about local beliefs, healing practices, and the role of sacred landscapes in farming calendars.
Enjoy tea or coffee and debrief with your guide and farmer hosts. Discuss questions about farming calendars, ritual timing, climate impacts, and livelihoods. Drive back to Addis Ababa, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on departure time and traffic. Alternatively, overnight again near Wonchi if you prefer a slower return.
