What you can expect
Ama Yangri stands approximately 90 kilometres north of the Kathmandu Valley, making it the closest highest peak to the capital city. This region is home to Sherpas, Tamangs, and Chhetris, nestled within the Helambu Circuit trekking route, a renowned destination for travellers within the Sindupalchok district of the Langtang National Park. The Helambu Circuit Trek, also known as the “Hyolmo Heritage,” offers a gentle, captivating journey through natural wonders and the distinct Hyolmo culture. Travellers are treated to breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayas, lush green landscapes, and the unique lifestyle of the Hyolmo people. From lower elevations, one can admire the Langtang Range, the Annapurnas, Manaslu, and even Everest on clear days. The language, customs, and attire of the Helambu Sherpas differ significantly from those in the Khumbu area and Rolwaling. Moreover, the region is renowned for its Thanka art.
Situated at an altitude of 3771 metres, the trek winds through picturesque rhododendron, pine, and oak forests. The best time to embark on this adventure is during the Nepalese month of Chaitra, typically falling in March or April. During the full moon day of Chaitra, Hyolmo people from various regions, both locally and internationally, gather at Ama Yangri. As part of a sacred ritual, they ascend the mountain before dawn to witness the sunrise. While lamas engage in lengthy prayers to honour the mother protector, locals indulge in butter tea, barley beer, and local wine, soaking in the warmth of the sun.
