What you can expect

  • Most visitors to Nikko spend the day photographing gold leaf and ticking off landmarks. This tour is built for a different kind of traveller — one who looks at the Three Wise Monkeys and asks: why does this phrase appear in an ancient Hebrew proverb written centuries before these carvings existed?

Aboard the express train from Asakusa, your tour leader Marty — begins the storey before you arrive. At Toshogu Shrine, you won't just admire the Yomeimon Gate's 508 carvings — you'll learn why one pillar was deliberately carved upside down, and why its motifs echo ancient Near Eastern traditions carried east along the Silk Road.

This is a private, small-group experience limited to 2-4 guests. No crowds, no microphone, no rush. The pace follows your curiosity.

Activity itinerary

Shinkyo Bridge

  • 15m
The iconic vermilion bridge marking the entrance to Nikko's sacred precinct. For centuries, ordinary people were forbidden from crossing it — a concept of sacred threshold found in many ancient traditions around the world.

Rinno-ji Temple

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
Nikko's largest hall, enshrining three giant gilded Buddhist statues. A striking example of how Buddhism, Shinto, and mountain worship fused into a uniquely Japanese spiritual tradition.

Nikko Tosho-gu

  • 1h 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
The centrepiece of Nikko. The Three Wise Monkeys ("see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil") are carved here — a phrase found in nearly identical form in an ancient Hebrew proverb predating the carving by centuries. The Yomeimon Gate features 508 carved motifs, including patterns echoing ancient Near Eastern decorative traditions carried east along the Silk Road. One pillar was deliberately carved inverted — perfection, the builders believed, belonged only to the divine.

Okumiya

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
The inner sanctuary and final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, enshrined as a deity. A place of extraordinary stillness — and a fascinating study in how Japan transforms its greatest historical figures into objects of worship.

Nikko Futarasan Shrine

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
The oldest sanctuary in Nikko, predating Toshogu by nearly 1,000 years. Dedicated to the deity of Mt. Nantai — Japan's sacred mountain concept and its parallels with sacred peak traditions in other ancient cultures.

Tōbu-nikkō Station

  • 30m
Free time for photographs, local shopping (yuba — Nikko's famous tofu skin delicacy), and departure from Tobu-Nikko Station for the return journey to Asakusa.
