DAY 1 · Small Circuit: The great icons and off-the-map temples
We'll start where we should start: Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world, in the best morning light. Your guide will position you at the exact angle for the perfect photo and explain the symbolism of its five lotus-shaped towers, the bas-reliefs depicting the Mahabharata, and the apsaras in each corridor.
We then head to Angkor Thom, the walled city where 216 smiling faces watch over you from the Bayon. We'll visit Baphuon, an 11th-century pyramid that has been undergoing restoration for decades, and the Terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King, with life-size reliefs. Along the way, we'll pass through the Victory Gate, embraced by roots and century-old trees.
This is where the sightseeing tour stands out from the rest. At Thommanon, a 12th-century temple, and at Ta Keo, the uncarved pyramid, your live guide will share the theories that archaeologists are still debating, something that no audio guide covers. And at Ta Nei, one of the quietest temples in the complex, you'll discover galleries overrun by roots like at Ta Prohm, but without the crowds.
After lunch (not included) at a place where Cambodians themselves eat, with authentic cuisine for less than $10, we'll arrive at Ta Prohm, where spung trees embrace towers and walls. Your tour guide will take you to spots without selfie signs. We'll end the day at Banteay Kdei, a ruined monastery enveloped in silence, and at Srah Srang, the royal swimming pool, where you can stroll slowly and breathe.
DAY 2 · Grand Circuit and Banteay Srei: the pink jewel of Angkor
We'll start at Preah Khan, a temple-city that was once a university, a hospital, and a centre of power, with vaulted passageways and a two-story structure unique in Angkor.
We then head to Neak Pean, a healing temple-island with four cardinal ponds, and Ta Som, a small temple enveloped in tranquility, with its eastern gate covered in moss and roots. Like Ta Prohm, but without the crowds.
The highlight is Banteay Srei: pink sandstone and the best-preserved reliefs in all of Angkor. It's 25 km from the centre, and most 2-day tours don't make it this far. Its sculptures are so fine that it was believed that only women's hands could have carved them.
After lunch (not included) in a rural setting near Banteay Srei, we'll visit Banteay Samre, surrounded by rice fields and with a silence reminiscent of Angkor Wat. We'll finish with East Mebon, on an artificial island in a 7 km² reservoir that the king used to reach by boat; Pre Rup, a pyramid-temple with panoramic views; and Prasat Kravan, red brick towers with reliefs of Vishnu carved into the stone.
Hotel drop-off before 6:00 PM.
