Todai-ji Temple

Tōdai-ji was first established in 728 AD during the Nara period as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan. The temple complex has undergone several reconstructions over the years, with the most recent being in 1709 after a fire destroyed the original buildings. The main attraction of Tōdai-ji is the Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall), which houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha. The statue, known as the Daibutsu, is over 16 metres tall and weighs around 500 tonnes. It was cast in the 8th century and is a marvel of ancient engineering. Apart from the Daibutsu-den, Tōdai-ji also features other notable buildings like the Nigatsu-do Hall, which offers panoramic views of Nara, and the Hokke-do Hall, which houses an impressive collection of Buddhist art.
