In the morning, we set off comfortably from city centre Sapporo and head north by private vehicle, embarking on a fulfilling and exciting one-day nature exploration journey. Our first stop is Japan’s most popular “Asahiyama Zoo”, which is not only a home for animals but also a nature park that conveys the warmth of life. You will have the chance to observe polar bears playing leisurely in the water, penguins parading right before your eyes, and seals gliding through transparent tunnels. The zoo’s ingenious design makes you feel as if you are sharing the same natural space with the animals, experiencing their most authentic way of life.
After leaving the zoo, we will pass by the location of the “Ken & Mary Tree”—an area that has become a symbol of Biei after featuring in a famous advertisement. From the vehicle, you can admire this elegant, solitary poplar tree set against the vast fields, creating a classic, postcard-perfect scene that’s ready to be captured in a photo.
Next, we venture into “Biei’s hidden scenic area” to visit the delicate and flowing “Shirahige Falls”. The waterfall cascades from a deep blue pool, resembling an old man’s white beard. The water flows year-round without freezing, and together with the surrounding lush trees and unique rock formations, it creates a serene and mystical picture. Especially when sunlight shines, small rainbows often appear in the mist, adding a touch of magic.
Shortly after, we arrive at the “Shirogane Blue Pond”, often called “fairy-tale water”. The pond’s distinct dreamy blue-green colour comes from mineral particles such as aluminium suspended in the water. It is crystal clear, with withered trees standing still in the water like a painting frozen outside of time. The colour of the pond shifts subtly with the seasons and light, offering a different visual experience with each visit.
The Forest Elf Terrace is nestled deep within the forest, like a hidden village straight out of a fairy tale where elves might dwell. Dozens of small log cabins are clustered along winding woodland paths, each one an independent craft workshop showcasing and selling handmade creations by local artists—from wood carvings and glassware to felted wool goods and artisan paper crafts. As evening falls, warm lights gradually brighten the cabin windows and forest trails, enveloping the entire woods in a soft, dreamlike glow. It feels like stepping into a magical world from a Studio Ghibli film.
As the day draws to a close, we begin our relaxing return journey to Sapporo in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The itinerary is well-paced and enriching, combining close encounters with adorable animals and some of Hokkaido’s most representative natural landscapes and rural scenery. Whether you’re travelling with family, friends, or solo, this day promises to leave you with beautiful memories and heartfelt moments. We look forward to sharing this unforgettable journey with you.
