Venice is a city tourists think they know. Cannaregio is the part they don't.

This small-group walking tour moves through one of the city's most residential areas over three hours, eating and drinking the food that Venetians have lived on for centuries. It starts with a pizza from an institutional bakery on Strada Nova, then settles into a local osteria for DOCG prosecco and a pair of cicchetti — a traditional meatball and polenta with shrimp in saor, the sweet and sour preparation Venice has been making since the Seraglio.

The walk takes you past Ponte Chiodo and through the Misericordia, away from the tourist routes, before arriving at a Venetian winery for a canal-side plate of artichoke risotto with a glass of local wine. The Jewish Ghetto comes next — one of the oldest in the world, founded in 1516, with stories your guide knows how to tell. Then a bacaro on the Fondamenta de la Misericordia for a proper Venetian spritz and two more cicchetti, including the city's beloved salted cod spread.

The tour closes with gelato from March to October and tiramisù from November to March, at the canal's edge, where Venice is at its quietest.
