What you can expect

March 18, 1848, was a special day in Berlin. Thousands of people were already out on the city's streets in the early morning. They expected concessions from the king: in addition to the already announced freedom of the press, they wanted a constitution, free elections, and measures to improve the conditions of workers.

Around noon, they gathered on the Palace Square. Soldiers began clearing parts of the square and took up positions, ready for combat. Shots were fired. People fled from the square into the streets. Thus began the fierce barricade fighting in Berlin, and with it, the Revolution.

Our walking tour follows key locations from this revolutionary period. We will start at Schlossplatz, then continue past the Zeughaus, the Neue Wache, and the Maxim Gorki Theatre to Gendarmenmarkt.

We will learn about the achievements of the revolutionaries that continue to shape and define our democracy to this day.
