What you can expect

Prepare yourself for a day of reflection, learning, and honouring the unwavering spirit of those who stood up against oppression. Our dark history tour offers two compelling package options, each uncovering a different chapter of Korea’s hard-fought freedom.

PACKAGE 1【Then: Fight for Independence】
The tour begins at 9:30 AM when you meet your guide at Dongnimmun Station Exit 5. From here, you will step into the dark history of Seodaemun Prison History Hall, where Korean freedom fighters were imprisoned, tortured, and executed for daring to resist. As you walk through the cold, dimly lit cells and gaze upon the torture chambers, you’ll feel the intense weight of their suffering and sacrifice. Next, you’ll make your way to Dongnimmun Arch, built to celebrate the nation's independence, this arch later became a witness to the crushing reality of Japanese colonisation. Your journey continues to Dilkusha, the former residence of Albert W. Taylor, an American journalist who exposed Japan’s brutal rule to the world. The final stop end at Tapgol Park 13:00 PM. It was here, in 1919, where the first cries for independence reverberated through the streets, sparking a nationwide uprising that would eventually lead to Korea’s freedom.

PACKAGE 2【Now: Road to Democracy】
The tour begins at 9:50 AM when you meet your guide at Gwanghwamun Station Exit 7. Begin at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, where you'll gain crucial context about Korea’s post-war reconstruction, military regimes and citizen resistance. Next, you’ll walk the vibrant alleys of Tongin Market and enjoy a traditional lunch amid echoes of the past. Your journey continues to Blue House, the former presidential office that once symbolised power and the controversial decisions made behind its gates. Then, descend into Korea’s darker corners with visits to Namsan KCIA headquarters and end at the Korea Democracy Foundation at 16:00 PM, former sites of surveillance, political oppression, and torture. These places once used to silence dissent but now serve as stark reminders of how hard-won Korea’s democracy truly is.

Each package offers a deep, immersive journey through Korea’s darkest hours and its inspiring rise to freedom. Choose one or experience both for a fuller understanding of Korea’s spirit and history.
