Our adventure begins with a scenic and thrilling “funivia” ride from Bolzano up to Soprabolzano (Oberbozen), setting the stage for an unforgettable mountain biking journey!.
The Route:
We start pedaling alongside the historic Renon narrow-gauge railway line before diving into a network of beautiful forest trails. These paths are bursting with life and the magical, calming sounds of nature. As we emerge from the woods, you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Dolomites and the surrounding rolling hills - a landscape so pristine and enchanting it feels like entering a parallel world.
The Wonder: The Earth Pyramids:
Our ultimate destination is the world - famous Earth Pyramids of Renon, an incredible natural phenomenon.
Here is what makes them so extraordinary:
How they formed: They originated from the erosion of clay deposits and rocks left behind by glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. Over millennia, heavy rainfall washed away the unprotected soil, but large boulders acted as “hats, ” sheltering the earth underneath and shaping them into towering columns.
Ancient yet ever-changing: Their origins date back 15,000 to 20,000 years. However, this is a living landscape. A European record: These are widely considered the highest and best-preserved earth pyramids in all of Europe, with some columns soaring up to 30 metres high.
A fragile balance: Each column is uniquely “crowned” by a heavy stone that protects it from the rain. If that capstone finally falls, the clay column erodes rapidly and disappears completely.
The Return Journey:
After marvelling at this natural wonder, we will make our way back. We will ride through the forest trails once more - perhaps testing out a few fun route variations along the way - as we head back to the cable car station. To top off the day, our descent back to Bolzano will treat you to spectacular, sweeping panoramic views of the city and valley below.
